BARCO’s 20” Rugged Flat Panel Chosen by Siemens AG For U-212 Project In its Evolution towards New Technology
EURONAVAL, LE BOURGET, FRANCE, 26 October, 1998 -- BARCO Display Systems has been chosen by Siemens AG, Erlangen, Germany, to provide a large series of RFD 251 rugged flat panels, which will be part of the Integrated Automation System of the U-212 submarine consoles for the BWB, “Bundesamt für Wehrtechnik und Beschaffung”. The U-212 submarines are operational in both the Italian and German Navy.
Siemens AG has selected BARCO’s compact 20.1” monitor, because of its extremely large image surface and good viewing angle of at least 70 degrees in all directions, and because it easily met the stringent environmental specifications Siemens requested for its standard COTS display.BARCO’s 20.1” RFD 251 is a MIL-tailored rugged flat panel display, designed to meet a wide variety of environmental specifications. A solid mechanical structure and a unique LCD bonding technique (controlled optical stack) protect the LCD against harsh environmental conditions such as shock, vibration, extreme temperatures and humidity. In addition, this bonding technique significantly improves the optical performance. Both LCD and backlight heating allow for an optimal response time.
The RFD 251 has been designed for high reliability and ease of maintenance: its backlights, mounted into a ruggedized protective tray, are shop-replaceable, and can be remotely controlled via a serial link.
The Automatic Phase Adjust (APA) function of the RFD 251 automatically locks the LCD sampling clock to a (drifting) graphics generator pixel frequency; thus avoiding image artefacts like blinking of lines and pixels.
