Barco develops custom-made visualization solution for innovative EADS OMADA console concept
DSEi, LONDON, UK, 13 September 2005 – Visualization specialist Barco has been selected by EADS Air and Naval Defence, Ulm, Germany, to develop a sophisticated, custom-made visualization solution for its OMADA console concept. The solution provided combines two advanced 19” auxiliary displays with a 46” large area display that is horizontally integrated into the console. The leading edge console design allows a team of 4 operators to manage complex military operations on a single screen.

Joint and combined military operations in a network-centric environment require an unambiguous tactical situation that is compiled and displayed in real-time. The accomplishment of this demanding challenge and the execution of command and control tasks without any delay are especially supported by the team-oriented design of the OMADA console concept. The large area display and the flat construction support information exchange and interaction within the command team to an until now unequalled level. Therefore, EADS provides the OMADA console concept as the perfect addition for a broad range of application-orientated operations centers.
The new 46” flat display designed for this project features a resolution of 1920 x 1080 (HDTV1080P). Its modular concept is based on Barco’s successful Modular Rugged Flat Display (MRFD) family, which has been specifically designed for highly demanding landbased, airborne, and naval C4I-SR applications that require graphics, video and other RGB data on a single display. The MRFD architecture combines a Rugged Display Module (RDM) with a high-performance Display Control Module (DCM), connected by a single cable, the Barco Intermodule Link (BIL). Thanks to this split design concept, the DCM can be placed in a separate location requiring less console space. To provide a single-unit installation, the DCM can also be attached to the RDM.
Along with the 46” displays, EADS also selected Barco’s brand-new 19” TL-248 displays to be used as auxiliary displays. The semi-rugged TL-248 units have a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels, brightness of 200 cd/m² and viewing angle of 170°. Most innovative, however, is the displays’ exceptionally small footprint. Only 1 U thick (43 mm/1.75”) and weighing only 6.5 kg (15.3 lbs), the TL-248 displays offer a new degree of freedom for integration into consoles, racks, shelters, vehicles, etc.
