BARCO ICD321 Monitors Designed for ECDIS Compliance

AMSTERDAM, November 18, 1997 -- BARCO Display Systems is proud to have the unique distinction of being the only shipboard display manufacturer in the maritime market to be compliant with ECDIS (Electronic Chart Display and Information System) in addition to being German Lloyd approved, for its maritime ICD321 series of displays.

BARCO Display Systems is the only shipboard monitor manufacturer to date, who has designed a 21 inch color maritime display, the ICD321 GL, that addresses the critical issues of shipboard magnetic fields, strong vibration, variations in temperature and humidity, and who provides the necessary color stabilization and calibration capabilities to replicate the specific colors for ECDIS which are comparable with the fixed colors on nautical paper charts. The ICD321 GL is both German Lloyd approved and ECDIS ready and is guaranteed for color stability.

In order to address the unique requirements of an ECDIS system, the BARCO maritime display features calibration capability, an ambient light control and quick degauss functions, along with an advanced electronic monitoring facility which stabilizes the black levels displayed on the monitor’s screen. Remote control functions will set the display for optimal setting during night and day conditions.

For navigational chart applications, the color and brightness stability of a monitor becomes a very critical issue. Symbols, such as water depths, land contours, buoys, and lighthouses are simulated by the computer and portrayed through specific colors on BARCO’s ICD321 GL, which are easily interpreted by the marine navigator. Six different color tables have been defined in the ECDIS system representing the color definitions on electronic nautical charts which can be utilized under day or night conditions. The ICD321 GL is equipped with software tools and controls that allow easy switching between the different color tables.

BARCO recognizes the vital importance of what a quality ECDIS color display means to the maritime market. The increasing speed of modern day vessels and ships of the future will require more effective and reliable navigation tools such as ECDIS. With the automatic anti-grounding technology and critical color representation capability of ECDIS, major environmental catastrophes have a higher probability of being avoided.
