BARCO Selected by SAINSEL for Spanish F-100 Frigate Program
SINGAPORE, May 6th, 1997 -- BARCO Display Systems has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract by SAINSEL Sistemas Navales S.A., located in Sevilla, Spain, to supply both rugged color displays, video frame grabbers, and high performance graphics controllers for the Multi-Function Naval Console (CONAM), which is designed to be fully compatible with the US Navy UYQ-70 Console.
SAINSEL will supply seventy units of the CONAM Console for the Distributed Advanced Naval Combat System (DANCS) Program based on the American AEGIS MK7 System, to be installed by Spanish shipbuilder Empresa Nacionál Bazán on the F-100 Frigates at Bazán’s El Ferrol shipyard. The new frigates are due to enter service between 2001 and 2004.SAINSEL, who is a long-time customer of BARCO’s, will integrate 122 BARCO RGN651 color displays, along with 83 IVS 4100 Display Controller Boards and 84 VFG Video Frame Grabbers in the next generation Area Air Defence frigates with command facilities.
BARCO’s RGN651 rugged color display was selected by SAINSEL because of its unique special Magnetic Immunity System (MIS), which allows the displays to operate in strong magnetic environments of up to 5 Gauss. Displays on board surface ships are impacted by magnetic fields, which distort the colors on the screen as the ship changes directions. The BARCO MIS capability eliminates this interference by creating a counter-magnetic field around the display tube.
BARCO’s IVS4100 Display Controller is a commercial of the shelf (COTS) product which supports the X-window standard and provides extremely fast image generation to display graphical information in real-time. The high performance graphics processing of the IVS4100 will be seamlessly combined with multiple sensors like radar, infra-red and video sources. The IVS 4100 will be equipped with 12 plane video memory allowing the display of 4096 colors, instead of the regular 256, used in an 8-bit configuration. The 12-bit configuration also allows X-Windows to run 16 different applications (clients) with a different color pattern. BARCO’s X11R6 server implementation provides some unique C4I features such as X-recording and play-back capabilities and X-Client Prioritization.
The IVS4100 will be used with the BARCO Video Frame Grabber (VFG) and is compatible with various Radar Scan Converters. Therefore, SAINSEL will be able to use its own radar scan converter via the IAVI interface to the IVS4100.
BARCO’s new Video Frame Grabber (VFG) displays 2 live video windows under X-windows control. Video and graphics are mixed on a pixel-by-pixel basis at the output of the generator allowing the video images to be displayed in real-time without compromising the graphics performance.
