BARCO Awarded 6.7 Million USD Contract to Supply Avionics Displays for V-22 Osprey Aircraft

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 4 April, 2000 -- BARCO Display Systems has received a 6.7 million US dollar contract from the Boeing Company, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, to provide Standby Flight Displays for the V-22 Osprey, Tiltrotor Aircraft. Boeing will integrate a modified version of the BARCO SFD 4.3 Avionics Standby Flight Display into the cockpit of the V-22 for the backup engine and fuel display.

The V-22 Osprey is a multi-mission aircraft designed for utilization by all services. The U.S. Marines use the V-22 for the vertical assault transport for troops, equipment and supplies, operating from amphibious assault ships or bases ashore. The U.S. Navy has multiple applications for the V-22 including combat search and rescue, delivery and retrieval of special warfare teams and fleet logistic support transport. For the U.S. Air Force, the Osprey is used for long-range special missions transport delivering U.S. Army Special Forces troops and equipment at mission radius in excess of 500 nautical miles. The Tiltrotor design allows the V-22 to combine vertical take-off and landing capability with high speed, high altitude flight. The aircraft will also fold for compact storage aboard ships.

The BARCO SFD 4.3 Avionics Display uses Active Matrix Liquid Crystal Display technology, which ensures that the displays have superior optical performance in terms of luminance, contrast and reflectivity. Boeing selected the BARCO SFD 4.3 because of its commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) design based on an open and modular architecture allowing BARCO to have the capability of adapting the unit to meet the specific standby flight display technical requirements of the V-22.

Boeing will begin accepting deliveries of the BARCO SFD 4.3 in June of 2001.
