BARCO Premieres Next Generation of High Performance VME Graphics Controllers

WASHINGTON, DC, April 18, 2000 -- BARCO Display Systems introduces their next generation of 6U VME graphics controllers, the AVS 5000 Series, at the Sea Air Space Exhibition, April 18-20, 2000. BARCO’s Advanced Visualization System (AVS) provides a highly configurable set of board-level products for integrating video, radar and imaging data into a high performance 2D/3D graphics display with a maximum resolution of 1600 x 1200.

BARCO’s AVS 5000 Series is based on industry standards for compatibility with other computer platforms and offers configuration flexibility with open interfaces for modular addition of customized functions and future growth capability. The AVS is based on commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) components in order to take advantage of the latest available technology, while also offering a very cost-effective solution compared to a MIL spec or proprietary product.

The AVS utilizes the X11 R6 industry standard X Windows software interface to support fast-text processing as well as high speed pixmap generation and copying. A PCI Mezzanine Card (PMC) adapter allows the AVS to directly interface to the host CPU’s PCI bus. BARCO has also developed an open radar interface for radar scan converters called Indexed Auxiliary Video Interface (IAVI). The AVS utilizes the IAVI for the insertion of radar data between the overlay and underlay graphics, allowing any map data to be placed beneath the radar image while target and track information can be situated over the radar image. The Overlay and Underlay buffers provide a total of 24 viewable planes and 32MB of video memory for flicker-free updating.

The AVS can optionally be equipped with a NTSC/PAL color video or a high-resolution monochrome video frame grabber mezzanine that will switch between one of five sources to provide a real-time video window display of the selected source. Graphics data can be overlayed on the video window.
