BARCO’s 20” Rugged Flat Panels Selected by Lockheed Martin for Several U.S. Navy Platforms
WASHINGTON, DC, March 30, 1999 -- BARCO Display Systems has been awarded multiple contracts by Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems, Eagan, Minnesota, to supply commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) 20.1” rugged color flat panel displays for several U.S. Navy platforms as part of the AN/UYQ-70 program. Lockheed Martin will integrate a series of BARCO RFD251S rugged color LCD into several different naval consoles, depending on the applicable platform configuration.
Lockheed Martin, the prime contractor for the AN/UYQ-70 display and computing system program, selected BARCO due to a unique capability of integrating an LCD luminance flicker compensation solution into their rugged RFD251S display. The BARCO RFD251S is the only rugged color 20.1” LCD with a proven, viable flicker compensation solution that enables naval operators to view acoustic sonar grams without the constant change in luminance (flicker) that is characteristic of LCD’s in these types of naval applications.BARCO also has had a very successful history of providing the U.S. Navy with a technology insertion roadmap that enabled a seamless display transition from high cost MIL-spec monitors, to cost-effective COTS rugged CRT’s, to the present COTS rugged flat panel display solution. The BARCO RFD251S rugged LCD dramatically reduces the weight and depth associated with rugged CRT’s.
Lockheed Martin will integrate the BARCO RFD rugged flat panel display into the UYQ-70 consoles, which are currently installed in all new build and upgrades for the U.S. Navy’s AEGIS surface ships. Other Navy platforms utilizing the RFD251S display include AN-USQ-89 and the E2-C Surveillance Aircraft.
