BARCO Receives Large Order for 20” Flat Panels and Display Controllers from STN Atlas

EURONAVAL, LE BOURGET,FRANCE, 26 October, 1998 -- BARCO Display Systems has been chosen by STN Atlas to provide a large series of FD 251 flat panels, IVS 4010 graphics controllers and Video Frame Grabbers for integration in navy consoles of the German minehunter project MJ333. The contract is worth over USD 1 million.

STN Atlas is a contractor for the German Minehunter Class MJ333, which is equipped with an integrated minehunter sonar system, including advanced sonar and a mine disposal vehicle. STN Atlas chose BARCO’s 20.1” FD 251 rugged flat panel, because of its unique 19” rack-mountability and solid mechanical structure for operation in harsh environments.

The BARCO FD 251 provides the user with an extremely large image surface and a viewing angle of at least 70 degrees in all directions. The light-weight Active Matrix color LCD supports different resolutions from VGA to SXGA through upscaling.

The FD 251 rugged display has been designed for high reliability and ease of maintenance: its backlights, mounted into a ruggedized protective tray, are shop-replaceable. Its Automatic Phase Adjust (APA) function automatically locks the LCD sampling clock to a (drifting) graphics generator pixel frequency; thus avoiding image artefacts like blinking of lines and pixels. Moreover, the FD 251 is mechanically and electrically compatible with the Mil-tailored RFD 251, a 20.1 rugged LCD monitor with bonded LCD. All the above functions make the FD 251 a perfect match for naval applications.

BARCO’s IVS 4010 was selected by STN Atlas because of its unique feature of simultaneous mixing of video, radar, sonar and graphics information, allowing all data to be displayed in real-time without any loss of overall performance of the system. The BARCO IVS4010 6U VME controller is a commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) product, which supports the X-window standard and provides extremely fast image downloading to display graphical information in real-time. The high performance graphics processing capability provided by the IVS4010 will enable the system to display multiple tracked targets at high rates of speed. BARCO’s Video Frame Grabbers allow the simultaneous display of two video windows in real time out of a selection of ten different sources.
