Barco and Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University start research program for advanced display software

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 21 September 2004 – Barco and the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) Air Traffic Management (ATM) Research Laboratory (EARL), Daytona Beach, Florida, USA, have come to an agreement to start research into advanced display software using Barco’s ODS TOOLBOX® development toolkit. Within the framework of this agreement, Barco will supply run-time and development licenses of ODS TOOLBOX® to the EARL research group. EARL will carry out research and provide assistance to Barco in return. Barco will have shared intellectual property rights in applications developed by the laboratory using the ODS TOOLBOX® and may implement them commercially as part of its development tool.

EARL is a self-funding, non-profit ATM research group and is part of the College of Aviation at the Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University. The EARL research group consists of a core of internationally recognized specialists in ATM research that are supported by graduate and undergraduate students from various university departments, including Space Physics, Computer Science, Meteorology, and Business Studies.

It is expected that ERAU graduate students in the human factors and engineering disciplines will be able to carry out research projects using the ODS TOOLBOX® software. If successful, these projects can be commercially implemented by ODS TOOLBOX®. For several years, EARL has been developing leading edge display software for advanced air traffic management concepts. The institution recently provided the Air Traffic Control (ATC) surveillance data display with integrated voice and data communications for the purpose of Boeing demonstrations of space based air traffic management to the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA). For this project, the EARL display software was operating on Barco’s ISISTM flat panel displays, which are operationally used by the FAA. The laboratory is continuing to research novel ways of information display, for example the display of embedded aircraft surveillance positions into 4-dimensional weather displays.

Barco Orthogon AG, which is part of the BarcoView division, has been a reliable and experienced partner for ATC customers for many years. Barco’s ODS TOOLBOX® is the most widely used application toolbox for operational ATC display systems. ODS TOOLBOX® provides the tools to visualize application data, process operator interactions, and exchange information with external systems. As a true application toolbox with extensible modularity, it can be used for rapid prototyping of new HMIs, for the implementation phase and for maintenance, with complete re-use of the code. It is used as the standard display software for operational ATC systems in many countries including the USA and most European countries.
