Barco adds new chapter to its successful Q-70 track record

Barco receives follow-on orders for over 7 million USD from Lockheed Martin

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 10 May 2005 – Barco has added a new chapter to its
Q-70 success story. Lately, the company has received substantial follow-on orders, worth over 7 million USD, from Lockheed Martin Maritime Systems and Sensors, Eagan, MN. The new orders comprise the delivery of commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) rugged flat panel displays, ultra-fast graphics generators and high-performance video frame grabbers to be integrated into various US Navy applications, including Aegis-class ships, submarines and Navy aircraft.

Barco has a long track record as a supplier of cutting-edge visualization technology for the AN/UYQ-70 program. The company has been providing CRT and LCD display technology, powerful display controllers and video frame grabbers for many of the nearly 4000 Q70 consoles that are operational today. Q70 workstations are currently installed aboard the US Navy’s Virginia, Seawolf, Los Angeles and Ohio class submarines, Aegis-equipped cruisers and destroyers, aircraft carriers, E-2C aircraft and various amphibious ships.

For this part of the AN/UYQ-70 program, Barco will provide Lockheed Martin with 20.1-inch RFD 251S Rugged Flat Displays and RGB video frame grabbers, which will be integrated into a variety of AN/UYQ-70 systems installed in submarines and Aegis-equipped surface ships. Specific system installations include the COTS Refresh Program for Aegis-equipped Cruiser Conversion, the Ship Self Defense System (SSDS) for US Navy aircraft carriers, and the airborne P-3 Anti-Surface Warfare Improvement Program (AIP).

Barco’s RFD 251S Rugged Flat Displays are specifically engineered for use in naval vessel environments. The units feature a 20.1-inch MIL-tailored rugged flat display, meeting the most demanding shock, temperature and vibration safety standards. Their front bonded optical stack ensures superior optical performance at all times and offers a truly rugged, condensation-free visualization solution under all conditions. The units that were selected by Lockheed Martin also feature Automatic Phase Adjust technology, offering clear and sharp images over time, and the patented LCD Flicker Compensation solution, which enables naval operators to view acoustic sonar images without the constant flicker that is characteristic of Liquid Crystal Displays in naval applications.

Together with the displays, Lockheed Martin also ordered Barco’s powerful AVS 5100 graphics generators and RGB video frame grabbers. The AVS 5100 boards are specifically designed to support high-resolution, drawing-intensive software. Thanks to their smart architecture, they provide the flexibility to generate graphics data in separate underlay, overlay and superoverlay planes, with simultaneous display of external video sources. Furthermore, the AVS 5100 boards feature separate busses for video and/or radar data insertion. The additional RGB Video Frame Grabbers will be used to capture and store high-resolution images during mission performance. Thanks to these Video Frame Grabbers, which have been specifically designed for this project, mission operators will be able to transfer and store images for analysis on the US Navy’s P-3 aircraft.
