Barco's emergency display system successfully passes Site Acceptance Test at Skyguide

KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 14 July 2005 – Barco is pleased to announce that its Emergency Display System EMDIS, which was recently delivered to Skyguide’s Upper Airspace Control Center in Switzerland (UAC-CH), has successfully passed the Site Acceptance Test. At the UAC-CH, the system will be used as a fallback solution for the main radar display system.

Barco’s EMDIS emergency display system will run 24/7 at each air traffic controller working position. Each position is an independent workstation, presenting the general radar situation and local controller inputs. The fact that EMDIS is a completely separate system helps to mitigate the loss of centralized services. Furthermore, the system includes an additional simulation and validation environment.

EMDIS is based on a Linux system. To facilitate the operational handling for the controller in case of an emergency situation, the system’s Look and Feel has been designed to resemble the main radar system. The HMI, which builds on Barco’s ODS TOOLBOX, has been tuned for high performance even in case of a large traffic load. Moreover, the system provides a set of configuration data to easily support different working positions. The availability of EMDIS is permanently supervised by Barco’s OPSCENTER SYSTEM MANAGEMENT (SMCF) which will report any interruption and automatically restart the system if necessary.

Currently, Barco’s EMDIS is being enhanced with an additional input channel in order to provide a connection with the radar fallback chain as well as with the main radar data system. The system’s internal architecture already prepares for an easy upgrade if the support of additional sectors or even other centers is required.
