Barco launches brand-new line of thin, lightweight, rugged displays

New product line targets lower-end segment of the Defense & Security market

DSEi, LONDON, UK, 13 September 2005 – Visualization specialist Barco is launching a brand-new family of rugged displays for the Defense & Security community. The new product line aims at bringing a new level of compactness, energy-efficiency and performance to the lower-end rugged display market. With this new offering, Barco further diversifies its portfolio of innovative display technology for Command & Control missions.

Typical target applications for the new display line are (non)-mission-critical naval environments, ground control stations for unmanned aerial vehicles, airborne applications in special-missions aircraft or landbased applications in shelters, vehicles or command posts.

“To date, Barco has been providing high-spec displays for the very demanding mission critical segment of the Defense & Security market,” said Mike Forde, Senior Director Sales & Marketing for Barco's Defense & Security business. “With our new range of thin, lightweight displays, we are focusing on a wider range of defense visualization applications that require high quality, smaller footprints and lower spec’ed display solutions. All offered at a lower cost to our customers.”

One of the most striking features of the new displays is their exceptionally small footprint. Only 1 U deep (43 mm/1.75” connectors included), the units will easily integrate into consoles or racks. Plus, their limited weight (only 6.5 kg/15.3 lbs) is a major advantage in airborne applications. Power consumption amounts to 65W (DC), which makes the new displays ideally suited for battery-powered applications. A broad choice of mounting options, including VESA, 19” rack and hinge mounting, allows for a host of configurations.

The first exponent of the new product line is the 19-inch TL-248, featuring a resolution of 1280 x 1024 pixels, brightness of 200 cd/m² and viewing angle of 170°. The semi-rugged unit is designed for operation between 0 and 50˚C (32°F and 122°F). It will continue to function in 95% relative humidity at temperatures of up to 40˚C (104°F). Furthermore, the display has been tested at atmospheric pressures down to 425 mbar (equivalent to outside pressure of 20,000 feet). It can survive shocks up to 30 g (12.5 m/sec).

The ingenious TL-248 display is equipped with Automatic Phase Adjust (APA) technology. This Barco proprietary technology suppresses pixel noise and eliminates image artifacts to provide crisp images at all times. In addition, APA eliminates the need for the operator to adjust the phase each time the display is started up.

The new TL-248 will be in series production early 2006.
