BARCO to Supply 20.1 Inch Flat Panel Displays for the UK Royal Navy Sonar 2087 Project
EURONAVAL, Le Bourget, France - BarcoView has been awarded a contract by DRS Rugged Systems (Europe) Ltd, [DRS RSE], Farnham, UK, to deliver a large quantity of 20.1” Rugged Flat Panel Displays FD251-II for the Sonar 2087 Project of the United Kingdom’s Royal Navy. Barco’s Flat Panel Displays will be integrated in the DRS RSE OPUS 2 multi-function dual-head consoles (both top-down and side by side), which will be installed in the Royal Navy Type 23 Duke Class frigates.
Following a close cooperation between DRS RSE and Barco, a sealed customized FD251 was developed to comply with the DRS RSE console design and project specifications. DRS RSE selected the sealed FD251 because of fit for application specifications and Barco’s continuing support of DRS RSE and their programs to ensure a quality product solution.Barco’s current FD251 incorporates the new, state of the art 20.1” LCD and is built using a unique bonding technique, creating a properly rugged and optically superior liquid crystal display. Ease of maintenance and use, thanks to unique features as a shop-replaceable backlight tray, Automatic Phase Adjust (APA) and many others, make this display a perfect match for many naval, airborne and ground-based applications and this for the entire project lifetime.For the Sonar 2087 project, Barco deliveries began in September 2002 with final shipments by end 2003.Sonar 2087 is a long-range fully integrated, towed, active and passive antisubmarine warfare system (ASW) that is expected to greatly improve the Royal Navy’s Type 23 Duke Class frigates ability to detect and classify submarines beyond the range of own-ship’s threat. Sonar 2087 will replace the obsolete Sonar 2031 on the Royal Navy’s Type 23 Frigate. Sonar 2087 will be the most advanced sonar ever deployed by the Royal Navy.
