Barco, Texas Instruments and XDC team to bring "Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith" at worldwide Cannes premiere
Kuurne, Belgium, May 15th, 2005 – Barco, official partner of the Cannes Film Festival, is pleased to announce that it has teamed with Texas Instruments (TI) and XDC to bring the digital world premiere of “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” to the Cannes Film Festival on May 15th. A Barco D-Cine DP100 projector featuring TI DLP CinemaTM technology, combined with a server from XDC, will allow the Cannes audience to experience “Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith” as Lucasfilm created it: with rich color, high contrast and incredible sharpness.
Recognized as the industry standard for Digital Cinema, Barco’s D-Cine DP100 projector is based on TI’s DLP Cinema™ technology, which enables it to deliver the benefits of 2048 x 1080 display resolution, 18.000 Cinema Lumens light output, a contrast ratio of 2000:1 as well as DLP Cinema™, CineBlackTM, CinePallete™ and CineLink™ image control, the perfect tool to answer the demanding needs of the digital cinema industry.Director George Lucas and Producer Rick McCallum relied upon a DLP Cinema™ projector to view dailies during production, make color corrections in post, and accurately capture the movie’s dark side. “Digital cinema exhibition is a vital part of the moviemaking process, enabling us to reduce production time and consistently deliver our desired vision to the screen,” said Rick McCallum, producer, “Star Wars: Episode III.” “We have been avid supporters of digital cinema since the digital premiere of ‘Star Wars: Episode I in 1999. For ‘Star Wars: Episode 3,’ we shot and edited the movie entirely digitally, and encourage viewers to see a digital presentation.”
Aside from the D-Cine DP100 projector that will be used in the Palais auditorium, the Cannes Film Festival also chose Barco D-Cine Premiere DP100 projectors for the digital screenings at the Lumière, Debussy and Buñuel auditoriums.
“As official partner of the Cannes Film Festival, Barco is and remains committed to the development of the global digital cinema industry. Our main aim remains to enable film makers to screen their work under optimum quality conditions, without the slightest compromise on quality,” states Barco’s Nico Vernieuwe, VP Digital Cinema.
As true pioneer of the digital cinema industry, Barco’s commitment to the evolution of the industry goes much further than a simple technology partnership. A combined effort with industry leaders such as TI and XDC for the film’s world premiere at Cannes allows the alliance to deliver to the exceptionally demanding requirements of the industry. With each artfully crafted film that features breath-taking clarity, consistent picture quality and true color reproduction, the bar in the production and display of digital films is raised further.
Following 10 years of pioneering market development, Barco is one of only three projector manufacturers to be awarded the licence for Texas Instruments DLP CinemaTM display technology. Since its award in 2000 Barco has developed the industry's widest range of projection solutions for digital cinema including its state-of-the-art 'D-Cine Premiere' 1.3k and 2k projectors, 'Communicator' software control and 'ACSAR' alternative content processors now installed in leading Post facilities and Digital Cinemas worldwide.
