Barco's stereoscopic dome projection: a world's first at the IMAX Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Copenhagen

IMAX Tycho Brahe Planetarium, Denmark's most advanced centre for popularizing astronomy and space research, has cooperated with Barco for a world’s first: a 1000 m² full stereoscopic projection on its impressive 24 meter large dome. As a prime contractor, Barco partnered with 7th Sense for the Image generating hard- and software, with nWave for spectacular 3D stereoscopic content and with Infitec for advanced stereoscopic eye-wear.
Since 11 January, the audience has been immersed in new breathtaking stereoscopic experiences, as well as views of the night sky, company presentations and IMAX films.

To reach unequalled stereoscopic immersion, Barco implemented its state of the art Infitec (Interference Filter Technology) stereo technology in a two channel passive stereo configuration using 4 Barco GALAXY 12+ 3-chip DLP projectors. The INFITEC technology splits the color spectrum in two parts: one for the left and one for the right eye. Filters inside the projectors and corresponding viewing glasses ensure that each eye only sees the part corresponding to its viewpoint, resulting in stereoscopic depth perception.

To ensure the units operate seamlessly together on a hemispherical screen, a range of dedicated functionalities is incorporated in the Barco GALAXY projectors: WARP predistorts the image for a correct geometry on the dome screen. DYNACOLOR corrects the projector’s color rendering, which is modified by Infitec’s spectral filtering for accurate 3D viewing without any ghosting, CLO (Constant Light Output) ensures all projectors in the 2-channel system maintain the same brightness and contrast level, independent of lamp life, Proprietary Optical Soft Edge Matching blends the pictures of all projectors into one overwhelming single stereoscopic image.

For easy maintenance and optimal performance at all times the installation is equipped with Barco’s own proprietary LDAT laser array system, allowing accurate and fast alignment of the display system and continuous backup in case a projector would fail/reach the end of life.

As the incorporated Infitec+ filter can be switched off, the projectors can also be used for mono projection.

This 2-channel GALAXY 12+ system displaying 1920 x 1080 HDTV images on a spherical screen in the Tycho Brahe Space Theatre is a unique achievement for Barco as it is the first application with passive stereo based on the Infitec+ technology in the market of 3D theatres.
