Frost & Sullivan honors Barco for its innovative 3D reconstruction engine for raw cone-beam CT

Kortrijk, Belgium, 18 September 2008 – The 2008 Frost & Sullivan European Product Innovation Award in the field of novel real-time image reconstruction products has been presented to Barco. The Belgium-based company leads in the provision of high-quality display and image processing solutions with its breakthrough three-dimensional reconstruction product, TDRS-7101. The Frost & Sullivan Award for Product Innovation is presented each year to the company that has demonstrated excellence in new products and technologies within its industry.

“Barco’s TDRS-7101 is a unique technology that allows for ultrafast reconstruction of high-quality diagnostic images and supports multiple user handling of the image reconstruction algorithms,” explains Frost & Sullivan Research Analyst Prasanna Vadhana Kannan. “The system offers a flexible and cost-effective solution for instantaneous imaging of raw cone beam computed tomography data applications.”

The TDRS-7101 is designed to have client-server architecture in such a manner that the reconstruction process is able to run on an isolated machine, even as the acquisition process can be divided. The product offers three-dimensional reconstructions based on advanced visualization technology. In addition, the system replaces the standard display controller used to display images and can be used for three-dimensional rendering.

“The system offers excellent benefits such as high performance and high precision, enabling the streaming of real-time image reconstruction without compromising the quality of the image,” states Luc Busiau, Market director Barco Modality OEM Solutions. “It also provides considerable support for truncated scans and exhibits superior performance in the management of both flat panel detectors as well as image intensifiers coupled with circular and elliptical acquisition paths.”

Barco possesses roughly 250 patent families and the firm’s patent portfolio contains about 100 approved global patents. The firm is focusing on technology areas ranging from display technologies and image processing to optics, opto-electronics, and mechanical support. “Last year, we innovated the PACS display market with the world's first 30-inch color LCD that can be used as two seamless 3 MegaPixel heads or one wide-screen 6 MegaPixel display,” comments Piet Candeel, Senior Vice-President of Barco’s Medical Imaging Division. “After its successful debut, this innovative diagnostic display system has already been selected for several PACS projects in the USA, Australia, Korea, Belgium, Germany, France and the Netherlands.”

Frost & Sullivan Best Practices Awards recognize companies in a variety of regional and global markets for demonstrating outstanding achievement and superior performance in areas such as leadership, technological innovation, customer service, and strategic product development.
