About the Unicorn Theatre
The Unicorn Theatre is one of the leading producers of professional theatre for children in Britain. The Unicorn has come a long way since it was founded in 1947 by Caryl Jenner as a mobile theatre company touring with a three ton second hand civil defense van.
It is now the proud owner of a new and purpose built, £13million, world-class theatre in the heart of London. However, while the location may have changed the mission remains the same, ‘to create amazing shows for children which are fun, challenging and exciting’.
The Unicorn will be a new cultural flagship and international centre of excellence, providing opportunity, excitement and first hand experience of live theatre to over 100,000 children a year.
Fixed Barco LED artwork
The team behind the new premises decided to commission some LED artwork for the Foyer. David Cotterrell’s work for the theatre, ‘Underworld’, was chosen as part of the Unicorn’s three year consultation with 30 children from Tower Bridge Primary School. The children helped Unicorn choose Cotterrell’s work after interviewing a total of six artists and discussing issues surrounding public art commissioning with the Unicorn.
‘Underworld’ takes the form of an LED screen that is embedded into the floor of the Unicorn’s foyer. David Cotterrell’s original and creative use of the LED will give visitors to the Unicorn a real and dynamic insight into what can be achieved with Barco LED.
Placed just over one meter below the floor are 24 tiles of Barco ILITE 6 MD, making a total area of 3.58m x 1.34m. The Barco ILITE 6 MD offers a 6 mm resolution with an unbeatable light output, colour uniformity, contrast, flexibility and seamless pictures.
