Barco leads the way with first time ever FDA clearance for digital mammography display
KORTRIJK, BELGIUM, 15 June 2004 - Barco is pleased to announce that its widely-used, CRT-based MGD 521M display is the world’s first dedicated mammography system to have received FDA 510k clearance. The FDA approval comes just weeks after the introduction of the industry’s first LCD display system for digital mammography, which has also been filed for FDA clearance. These two milestones clearly confirm the leading role Barco takes in digital imaging solutions for PACS and mammography.
The 5 MegaPixel MGD 521M Medical Grayscale Display has been a preferred choice for life-critical decision-making for several years. Radiologists around the globe value the high luminance of 450 cd/m² and the exceptional contrast ratio of 2000:1, allowing them to detect very subtle details in digital mammograms. The MGD 521M also incorporates a unique Luminance Uniformity Correction function, which ensures that the displayed medical image has the same brightness level across the entire display surface, even in the corners. Furthermore, the display is equipped with a digital focus and astigmatism correction, offering optimum sharpness, combined with perfect geometry, across the screen. All of these specific MGD 521M features provide unequalled image fidelity and stability over time and across displays, during the whole economic lifetime of the product.Albert Xthona, Product Manager Digital Mammography, adds: "The FDA clearance for our existing CRT solution, along with the introduction of the CORONIS® 5MP Mammo LCD system, confirm the leading position Barco has acquired in the development of advanced visualization technology for clinical and diagnostic viewing applications in PACS and mammography. This FDA 510k approval for a dedicated mammography display is an important step forward in today’s softcopy medical imaging as it opens up the opportunity for radiologists to read mammography images on PACS workstations. It goes without saying that Barco has also made an FDA filing for the CORONIS® 5MP Mammo flat panel display system, launched a few weeks ago at the SCAR exhibition.”
