Barco displays its complete visualization system capabilities at ITEC 05

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – Visitors at booth D16 will see the latest advances in simulation display systems, such as the new SIM 5plus and iCon H600 projection systems, and learn about the new SEER mini-dome and HALO immersive training solutions.

“We want to show ITEC attendees that Barco has the capabilities, resources, and know-how to deliver a complete visual display system,” says Michel Vandeplas, President for Barco Presentation and Simulation. “We’ll be introducing several new visualization systems specially designed to meet a wide range of simulation requirements, reduce risk, and lower the cost of ownership.”

Barco, the technology leader, will raise the bar again at this year's ITEC. The company will exhibit its "latest advances in store for 2005 and the future," from complete visualization system capabilities to risk-reducing upgrade solutions for simulation and training. This includes the introduction of Barco's new SIM 5plus system, a dedicated projection solution specially designed for simulation, training efficiency, and reduced operational and maintenance costs. Barco will be unveiling a special introductory offer at booth D16 to upgrade to the new SIM 5plus system.

Next to being a high-end projection solution for most demanding markets such as flight simulation, the SIM 5plus offers an unrivalled platform for the upgrade of existing simulators, achieving the highest near-to-reality visualization for maritime, driving, flight, gunnery, and ATC simulation. The SIM 5plus can be installed in the current location of former CRT and older, off-the-shelf non-simulation dedicated projectors. It offers a lower cost of ownership to simulation facilities. The SIM 5plus is equipped with a dual-lamp system for easy replacement and maximum up-time, and provides fast Ethernet connection to facilitate central management of several simulators over LAN, either on PC or Barco’s xRACU (Remote Alignment and Control Unit).

Barco designed the SIM 5plus system to meet a number of challenging simulation application demands. At ITEC, Barco will demonstrate the system’s dual-point viewing capabilities on a two-channel configuration. Per channel, two projectors are used, one for each viewpoint. Infitec technology filters the color spectrum of the image in two parts, one for the position of the left and one for the position of the right viewer. Matching filters in the projector and in the glasses ensure the correct information goes through to the corresponding viewer. Barco also offers solutions for night vision simulation training for the SIM 5plus and other Barco projection systems. This technology allows users wearing NVG devices to see bright, properly defined targets and images for true night and dusk training accuracy and realism.

Barco will also be displaying its new iCon H600 system. This new all-in-one collaboration, analysis, and decision-making projection solution has a native 1920 x 1080 HDTV resolution and 16:9 wide aspect ratio plus versatile windowing to display multiple sources in full detail on just one screen. This remarkable 6,000 ANSI lumen LCD projector is equipped with a powerful integrated display server, which can be easily adapted to the user’s network infrastructure, enabling instant, collaborative meetings between remote meeting sites. Control over a projector can be passed instantly over a LAN to any meeting location. A complete fleet of projectors can be fully managed and monitored over the network from the central IT/AV service.

Barco’s new immersive simulation display systems on the scene include the SEER mini-dome and HALO training environments. Barco now has 15 mini-dome orders and commitments as part of its long list of system installation references worldwide. Barco Simulation installed the first mini-dome system at Lockheed Martin for the F/A-22 Threat Station (MICS) simulator. It consists of eight linked mini-dome environments, allowing pilots to fly eight simulated aircraft simultaneously and cooperatively. Barco recently delivered four 8-channel mini-dome systems to Saab for the most advanced version of the Grippen multi-role fighter used by the Swedish, Hungarian, and Czech Republic Air Forces.

Barco’s HALO is a cost-effective immersive display that's designed to improve training performance. The system is powered by a Barco projection system that projects training content onto a unique cylindrical, rear-projection screen, creating a continuous field-of-view. The multi-channel, edge-blended display system eliminates distracting shadows produced in front-projected display systems, as well as view-interrupting bezels typically found in LCD panel systems. Barco projection technology is optimized for matching color, brightness, grayscale, and other visual parameters to maximize the simulation experience.

Barco will also be supporting its participating partners with equipment and on-site technical support for their visual display solutions. Visit GMO booth #D17 and CAE booth #D31 to see other Barco visual display solutions.
