As of 1 September 2008 Thales Naval Division has acquired Barco's software development unit for maritime safety and surveillance, including the OPSCenter software components.
Virtual Waterway (VWW) is a virtual navigation environment designed to simulate traffic on inland waterways and coastal waters. The simulation is focused on realistically modeling the dynamics of vessels in water and on generating typical sensor measurements such as radar or GPS. Thanks to the possibility to simulate a large number of vessels and objects, even complex traffic scenarios can be created.
VWW can be linked to external systems such as radar processing systems, navigation aids, or VTS and coastal surveillance systems, hence allowing to extensively and safely test and validate their functionality (e.g. integrated sensor signal processing, data presentation or course control and guiding line planning) under real-time and close-to real-life conditions. The realistic modeling and comprehensive environment qualify VWW as perfect tool to train controllers.
