Barco Genesis III selected for HELISIM Program, UK Lynx Aircrew Training and Nimrod Aircraft Simulators

Next Generation Digital Technology Creates a New Standard for Full-Flight Simulation

Barco Simulation Products is proud to announce that its Genesis III Calligraphic Technology has been selected by Thales Training and Simulation to support the HELISIM helicopter simulator program. HELISIM will bring its two full flight simulators progressively into operation starting in 2002. The simulators will have four interchangeable cabins, offering large field of view for pilot training on several types of helicopters, providing 1,000 pilots with 10,000 hours of simulation per year. The first customer of the HELISIM simulator will be the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

The Barco Genesis III creates a new standard for full-flight simulation and answers the need from the market for a more reliable, more stable, easy-to-maintain product with higher resolution. “In developing the Genesis series, we focused on three key points,” said Bob Clodfelter, Director of Engineering, “reliability, maintainability, and performance.”

Not only does the Genesis III offer unrivaled reliability through a fully focused digital architecture, the Genesis products are also easier than ever to maintain. “We’ve also dramatically reduced the number of LRU’s (line replacement units) and those that remain are modular. Exchange or repair can be done very quickly so uptime increases exponentially,” commented Clodfelter.

On top of that, Genesis III projectors offer a performance level that cannot be matched by any other product. The Genesis III is the only product designed from the ground up to offer picture-quality resolution and scan rates up to 120 kiloHertz. This higher scan rate translates into increased calligraphic performance in both day and night mode.

Next to the HELISIM program, Barco’s Genesis III has been selected to support yet another helicopter simulator program. Thales Training & Simulation will be the supplier of the Lynx Full Flight Simulator, which will equip the new helicopter aircrew training facility at the School of Army Aviation in Middle Wallop, England. Five state-of-the-art Genesis III projectors will be part of the five-channel configuration. Visualization includes all-weather conditions over both land and sea during day, dusk and night.

The UK Royal Air Force’s Nimrod MRA.4 program proves that Barco’s Genesis III is not just ideally suited to support the demanding visualization of helicopter simulators. For this Aircrew Synthetic Training Aids program, which is provided by Thales, Barco will integrate 10 Genesis III projection systems. The Genesis III will provide high-resolution images with proper dimensions and distortions for pilot and co-pilot training in the Nimrod MRA.4 Dynamic simulators. Training scenarios will include maritime patrol, air-to-air refueling, and search-and-rescue training under a full range of diurnal and weather conditions.
