Shanghai Maritime University contracts Barco for first stereoscopic, 360° ship bridge simulator

Barco, a world leader in advanced simulation display technology, has recently been contracted by the Shanghai Maritime University to build China’s first stereoscopic, twelve-channel ship bridge simulator with a 360° field of view. Barco will also provide all installation and system integration services. The multi-purpose simulator will be used by the University as well as third parties.

The Shanghai Maritime University is one of China’s leading-edge maritime universities in Shanghai, China. With a history of nearly a century, the university has over 17,000 students, and several engineering and research departments that together offer some 30 study programs. For its proposed maritime simulation building, it was looking for the right company to provide a technically outstanding, state-of-the-art solution.

“We chose Barco because of their excellent reputation as a developer of integrated systems with the highest quality,” explains Professor Shi Yong Hui, “Their proposal was technically very sound. We knew what we wanted, and they know how to provide it.” The proposed solution is a twelve-channel stereoscopic system with a 360° field of view, an image height of 5.5m and screen length of 70m. Twelve Barco Galaxy 12 HB+ projectors with Active Infitec stereo capabilities drive the system in front-projection, while a special Barco remote control takes care of automatic realignment, color and brightness adjustments.

The Galaxy system is optimized for system integration through several typical Barco technologies, such as edge blending, which eliminates seams where projections from two projectors converge, or DynaColor and linked constant light output (CLO), which ensures one image free of differences in color and brightness levels. A very important feature in the Galaxy projectors is their geometry correction technology, that takes care of warping the images around the 360° curved screen without distortions, in seamless overlap.

The stereoscopic ship bridge simulator is expected to enter service as soon as September 2007, with the first shipments due in June of the same year. It will be used by the University as well as third parties for a multitude of training applications.
