Oil and Gas Industry Views Barco Simulation’s TRACE™ at International Conference
Xenia, Ohio – TRACE, Barco’s new scalable plug-and-play virtual environment for team collaboration, made its world debut at the 2003 Schlumberger Information Solutions (SIS) Forum in Miami, Florida (September 29 – October 1). Leaders from the oil & gas industry, various vendors, and key Schlumberger associates saw first-hand how this revolutionary technology is used to view, analyze, and explore information simultaneously at different locations.
“TRACE incorporates all the functionality of a large-scale visualization system into a cost-effective, portable, plug-and-play solution,” said Ken Hunter, director of sales and marketing V&AR for Barco Simulation. “You get 3D collaborative viewing capabilities without investing in a large-scale immersive facility. Designers, engineers, and scientists can explore concepts and review their work as a team using virtual models and environments.”
Working with Barco, SIS demonstrated several collaborative sessions with remote locations to visualize and manipulate seismic data in real time. To do this, a system comprised of Barco’s two-channel TRACE technology and the Schlumberger proprietary Inside Reality® software was set up on site at the Forum running on a CADWallTM. Both systems were driven by Barco’s Galaxy WARP™ Active Stereo three-chip DLP™ projectors.
Using Inside Reality remote collaboration software, the team in Norway effectively interacted with the team in Miami through the iCenter™ CADWall system. Another demonstration showed the TRACE system in Miami interacting with colleagues in Houston.
Barco Simulation has implemented numerous visual display projects for Schlumberger and various large oil and gas companies worldwide. The company designs and builds turnkey immersive visualization solutions for virtual collaboration, analysis, and decision-making. Installations range from virtual prototyping in the automotive industry, oil and gas exploration, molecular modeling, medical surgery, and scientific research.
More on TRACE
The Barco TRACE is driven by Barco Galaxy WARP™ projectors for bright images even in high ambient light conditions. It is designed to fit through a normal door opening without requiring any room modifications or build-out. It will enable teams to visualize data in a well-lit room, allowing for better eye-to-eye collaboration. Active 3D stereo display enhances intuitive understanding and accurate analysis of the complex data. Real-time interaction with the data leads to quick team decision-making. In addition, the Barco TRACE is scalable from a one-channel to multi-channel configuration.
Typical applications include oil and gas exploration, engineering design, high-end video conferencing and real-time collaboration, and immersive training and simulation. In short, TRACE is suited for any application requiring the visualization of complex data sets or vast amounts of information.
