Barco’s new SIM6 Ultra II provides longer light output and reduces operation costs

At I/ITSEC 2003 Barco proudly presents a new generation of SIM6 Ultra: the SIM6 Ultra II. It maintains all of the valued features of the SIM6 Ultra, but lamps last longer, operation costs are less, and for some applications it performs better.

Since its launch at I/ITSEC 2001, Barco’s SIM6 Ultra has become a renowned reference in the world of high-end simulation. Advanced WARP 6 geometric distortion, transport delay reduction, optical soft-edge matching, DynaColor color matching: everything customers valued was built in, or is available as an option. Yet, Barco has refocused on a new horizon: the SIM6 Ultra II.

Longer lamp life and lower cost are achieved by a novel illumination system based on a compact and economical 250 W UHP lamp in conjunction with optimized filtering. This highly efficient illumination system delivers a high brightness and color uniformity yielding an even more vibrant and natural looking image over a lengthy time. The cost of ownership in normal operation mode is lowered by 15% thanks to 1500-hr lamp life span and reduced wear on consumables. In economy mode, a 40% reduction is reached and lamp life is doubled to 3000 hr while 80% of the normal brightness is maintained. Moreover, as lamps are carefully fitted in a lamp house, no realignment is needed after replacing lamps. First shipments for the SIM 6 Ultra II are planned for Q2 - 2004

Newly introduced proprietary technology options further enhance the performance of the SIM6 Ultra and SIM6 Ultra II projectors. Faster alignment and easier maintenance can now be achieved with the new Constant Light Output (CLO) option for the SIM6 Ultra and SIM 6 Ultra II projectors. This option - a worldwide first for LCD projectors - enables the user to set a certain brightness level that is constantly monitored and maintained over time.
At the same time, the improved optical dimmer now yields more accurate contrast enhancement for nighttime simulation. The addition of a closed-loop control system to Barco’s proprietary ECR (Extended Contrast Ratio), widely used to improve contrast and bit depth in dark scenery, leads to higher accuracy and repeatability.

In addition, a more affordable state-of-the-art WARP6 predistortion widens the scope of applications. Since its introduction at I/ITSEC 2002, Barco’s WARP6 has become widely accepted as the standard for state-of-the-art predistortion, as it offers the ultimate in precision. Full detail and resolution are maintained, and aliasing is maximally suppressed – all without adding processing delay. Because the image generator no longer has to geometrically predistort the image, it requires less processing power. By lowering the cost of the WARP6 option by 30%, Barco widens the scope of applications for this trend setting technology.

With the newly introduced proprietary technologies and the introduction of the SIM 6 Ultra II projector at I/ITSEC 2003, Barco strengthens its position as a leader in visualization solutions for simulation.

About I/ITSEC
Initiated in 1966 as the Naval Training Device Center/Industry Conference, the conference has evolved and expanded through increased participation by the Army, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Industry. In 1979 it became known as the Interservice/Industry Training Equipment Conference. It attracts over 14,000 participants and over 3,000 attendees annually.
