Case study

The Changan University in Xian, China’s leading university in automotive scientific research, recently enhanced its “211 project” capabilities with a 3D Driver-Automobile-Road Simulation System, which utilizes a state-of-the-art Barco visualization system.

For its visualization systems, Barco attaches great importance to optimal viewing comfort. So for the Changan University, the picture is projected on a curved screen with a 150 degree horizontal field of view to provide full immersion. Because the complete field of view is at the same focal distance there is no eye fatigue, and fine detail is perceived over the complete viewing area. For color and brightness uniformity, projection technology and the screen are carefully matched. A curved screen of 2.4 m high with a radius of 3.3 m is powered by three SIM 4 single-chip DLP projectors. Each projector features dedicated VR multi-channel projection optimizations such as Constant Light Output (CLO) and DynaColor for excellent cross-channel color and brightness uniformity over time, while optical soft edge matching maintains deep blacks in dark scenes, allowing driving behavior research in night conditions. For easy maintenance and perfect realignment, the system laser diode arrays project reference points on the screen, while test pattern generating software verifies color and brightness uniformity and geometry.

Barco’s state-of-the-art visualization system will allow the 3D Driver-Automobile-Road Simulation center to further Changan Universities’ research in the domains of engineering, driving safety, and traffic transport research.
