Case study

With a resolution of 4640 x 1920 pixels (about 9 Megapixels) and a display size of 5.20 m x 2.15 m the pilot project of the University of Konstanz and the Belgian specialist for large screen displays Barco, is the most advanced ultra high resolution display in Europe. Applications include CRM (Customer Relationship Management), Marketing, Monitoring as well as the Analysis and Exploration of Financial, Network, and Web Data.

According to most recent estimations, the quantity of information - which is worldwide present - doubles every 20 months. Barco’s Mega-CADWall helps to deal with this flood of information. On the Barco Mega-CADWall automatic and interactive methods for data exploration can be combined with advanced visualization techniques in order to provide new tools for an efficient analysis of large data sets. The Mega-CADWall is also the ideal tool to visualize the methods to structure, filter, classify, browse and search large amounts of electronically available data, perfectly visualising the structure and data values, both for analysis and visual interaction. The advantage of visual data exploration on Barco’s Mega-CADWall is that the user is directly involved in the data mining process.

The Mega-CADWall is based upon a rear-projection system of multiple redundant dual-lamp, single-chip DLP projectors. It can easily fit in existing rooms as its structure is limited to a depth of less than 2.5 m. Thanks to the rear-projection, the various specialists collaborating with the display, can watch more details from closeby without casting any shadow on the screen.

"The extremely high resolution and the seamless picture enables to display things, that simply cannot be seen in lower resolution", comments Daniel Keim, Professor for Informatics at the University of Konstanz. “Although the total picture is the combined result of eight Barco SIM4 projectors, it does not show any seam at all. Sensors in the projectors permanently measure, compare and adjust the projected picture from corner to corner for excellent color accuracy, brightness uniformity and unequalled sharpness of 1.12mm per pixel, so the picture remains homogeneous and unavoidable projector lamp changes are fully balanced. The redundant dual-lamp system reduces possible downtime considerably.“

“Someone who has a data bank, which counts Millions of data, whether it deals with customer behavior of a supermarket chain or a telephone operator, can impossibly visualize these data in such an easy way,” says professor Keim. ”Usually these data are reduced to simple bar charts. On the Mega-CADWall, simple bars and charts are transformed into real data land maps which enables recognizing in pixel detail where the best and worst customers are situated.”

Next to Information and Data mining this unequalled ultra high resolution large screen display also brakes new ground for 1/1 scale car design, oil and gas exploration, homeland security and scientific research. At the University of Konstanz the Mega-CADWall will be mainly used for the Bachelor and Masterstudies in Information Engineering.
