FAW - First Automobile Works - is China's N° 1 automobile manufacturer. Well-known for its Hongqi (red-flag) limousine, which is the car of choice for government officials, and with ranges such as Jiaxing Mini MPVs, Xiali saloon cars, FAW operates many joint venture manufacturing concerns in China, among others with Volkwagen, Audi, Chrysler, Mazda and Toyota, for which it will produce the Toyota Prius hybrid passenger vehicle in its Changchun City branch.
For the FAW Engineering and Design Center, Barco realised an impressive stereoscopic display wall for automotive design and prototyping. The screen of 7.5m wide and 2.4m heigh is powered by a 3channel high brightness Barco Galaxy projection system. The threee projectors, each delivering 5000 ANSI lumens light output, are dedicated for use in multi-channel systems and feature Constant Light Output and Dynacolor for a stable and uniform light output and color reproduction over the total screen surface. Proprietary Optical Soft Edge blending ensures that the overlapping blend areas maintain their black levels and high contrast ratio in dark scenes. Thanks to a high refresh rate the Barco Galaxy is the projecter of choice for active stereo viewing delivering unmatched accurate depth perception.
The Barco CADWall will proof an excellent tool for FAW's engineering and design center, which established itself as an impressive forward-thing force within China's vehicle industry. To date, the center has developed over 1,000 prototypes, winning over 200 design awards from various state ministries.
