HBS - FIFA World Cup
Case study
The 2006 World Cup was being broadcast from Germany thanks to Barco’s managed monitoring solution courtesy of Host Broadcast Services (HBS) in Munich.
The International Broadcast Center (IBC) was the location of the Master Control Room (MCR) in Munich which comprises of two 3x2 and one 2x2 OverView cDR+67-DL video wall. The MCR video wall measured 20x15 meters and had up to 20 operators working at one time. Their tasks were monitoring the feeds, production of programs and quality control. The IBC was the nerve center for global broadcast and media coverage of the 2006 FIFA World Cup Germany™ and was connected to all World Cup venues across Germany.
As well as producing the multilateral coverage, HBS is responsible for providing unilateral production, transmission, commentary facilities and associated services for world broadcasters. In order to provide the broadcaster with best quality and service, there has to be several monitoring points in the production and transmission chain.
All feeds, of which there were more than 200 SD/HD-SDI were synchronised and monitored in the Master Control Room. Barco supplied the complete solution, including the Hydra controllers, the Overview projection modules and 18 47” LCD displays with full HD resolution for HD-SDI monitoring. The LC-47 displays were also used for monitoring in EBIF-production (extended match coverage for broadcaster), highlight production, and the quality control. Connected to the master-router from Grass Valley every one of the 25 Hydra controllers drove its single OverView display in SXGA+ resolution and could be managed and controlled as a single display or video wall by the network oriented controlware. Full integration of router protocol Andromeda over IP for flexible handling of the Under Monitor Display (UMD) has been completed during the installation. Depending on the operator needs each Hydra was individually configured to monitor up to 30 SD or HD-SDI with embedded audio.
In addition to the MCR, there was a 4x1 rear-projection video wall in the Production Control Room, two 2x1 display walls for the EBIP-Show (Extended Basic International Feeds), and a 1x1 display wall and 47” LCD display to be used for quality control.
