Two examples were presented: a prostate surgery and an ENT surgery. Surgeons commented both surgical procedures, which allowed the more than 150 event participants (doctors and theatre nurses) to know exactly what the surgeon was doing. The surgeries were performed under the direction of head physician MUDr. Jan Schraml and MUDr. Karel Sláma Jr. in Masaryk Hospital in Ústí nad Labem. Conference attendees could watch the surgeries as stereoscopic, high-definition recordings while listening to the surgeons’ live comments and being able to ask them questions. That was one of the reasons the presentation captured much attention. In addition to CESNET, the Internet broadcast was co-organized by the Slovak academic network SANET and the company AV Media, while the unique 3D projector was provided by the Norwegian company ProjectionDesign.
CESNET has long been involved in medical video broadcasts over the Internet as part of its research activities. With its results and practical presentations, it has recently engaged attention at many international events.
The Use of Information Technology in Health Care colloquium in Banská Bystrica was jointly organized by the Health Department of the Administration of the Banská Bystrica Self-Governing Region, the Slovak Regional Medical Chamber and the Slovak Regional Chamber of Dentists.
The CESNET Association was founded by Czech universities and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic. The association undertakes research and development in the field of information and communication technologies, and develops the national multi-gigabit optical network CESNET2, designed for research and educational purposes. With its research activities and accomplishments, CESNET represents the Czech Republic in international projects, most notably the pan-European GÉANT network building project and grid projects (EGI.eu), and participates actively in their implementation. Among other things it deals with the use of high-speed networks for sharing multimedia data both through synchronous video conferencing and shared applications and asynchronous streaming.
