The Dutch Railway Museum in Utrecht, which was originally established in 1927, reopened in 2005 after an extensive, two-year renovation. The investment, aimed at making the museum more appealing to the general public, bore fruit: the number of visitors grew steeply, reaching 420,000 people in 2015. In 2016, the museum embarked upon another ambitious refurbishment: a major overhaul of World 4 – the hall which showcases the country’s most iconic, historic trains.

We needed reliable, user-friendly projectors with a high light output as there’s a lot of daylight in the hall. The RLS-W12 fitted the bill.

Education through entertainment
“We strongly believe in education through entertainment,” says museum director Marten Foppen. “In 2005, we were a trendsetter, one of the first museums to offer interactive exhibits. Lots of museums have followed since then.” When a study revealed that visitors hardly stayed more than a few moments in World 4, Marten Foppen and his team called in the help of Jora Entertainment to rethink the hall. They worked out an interactive set-up which combines images and sound with ten iconic trains, to tell the story of 175 years of rail transport.

High light output and reliability
Jora Entertainment suggested using our RLS-W12 projectors to bring the history of the railway to life. Bram van Sprang, project leader, Jora Entertainment: “We needed projectors that would ensure a high light output, as there’s a lot of daylight in the hall. In addition, it had to be utterly reliable and user-friendly. Barco’s RLS-W12 fitted the bill. The users praise its ease of use. The HDbaseT™ input, by the way, is certainly an added bonus!”

TEA: the Oscar for the entertainment industry

The revamped hall, which was inaugurated in July 2016, marks a step-change difference for the museum. It is, by the way, not the only set-up at the Dutch Railway Museum that features Barco technology. 18 Barco F22 projectors help create immersive visuals at the popular Fire Test experience. The educational attraction was honored with a TEA award – the Oscar for the entertainment industry – by the Themed Entertainment Association (TEA) in 2014, on account of its outstanding design and great implementation.
