The Trondheim Science Center (Vitensenteret i Trondheim) is a popular place of interest for visitors of all ages. Not only does it offer a hands-on science exhibition; it now also houses Norway's first 3D planetarium. The new dome theater offers visitors an unforgettable immersion into space, through images ánd sound in 360 degrees, with Barco's IOSONO immersive sound system.

The IOSONO technology gives us a major advantage over other ‘spatial‘ audio technologies.

Spectacular full dome shows
The planetarium will take its visitors on an unforgettable journey to the universe with spectacular full dome shows. The venue will be used for film screenings, conferences and educational purposes. For a fully enveloping sound experience, 38 loudspeakers arranged in 3 layers have been installed in the dome, all driven by the IOSONO CORE audio processor.

Audio and visual with no borders

The installation was set up in collaboration with Sky-Skan and marks the sixth time the company is using Barco's IOSONO immersive sound in their bespoke theater installations. "The dome theater environment for us is the ideal space to explore and exploit immersive sound technology," says Glenn Smith, Managing Director at Sky-Skan Europe. "No other environment gives you a 360 visual and audio palette to create the ultimate surround experience. Audio and visual with no borders – only a dome brings this together. The IOSONO technology gives us a major advantage over other ‘spatial‘ audio technologies in that it allows us to actually place sounds anywhere in the calibrated 3D sound space, and it doesn’t require us to work with a specific speaker layout or production standard. Working together with our own simulation software, we can place sounds with a displayed object and the sound stays with the object wherever it travels on the dome display."
