Smithsonian Institution suits up with Barco to improve its AV equipment monitoring and control

Barco Overture, the solution for A/V equipment monitoring and control and Medialon Show Control have recently been deployed at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African-American History and Culture (NMAAHC), National Museum of the American History (NMAH) and National Museum of the American Indian (NMAI).

Barco has successfully installed its Overture audiovisual monitoring and control software solution along with Medialon Show Control systems within multiple Smithsonian museums to manage and automate audiovisual and lighting devices. The former systems in place had complicated interfaces, lacked documentation and required significant programming time if any changes had to be made which limited management of their system. The Museum of American History now uses Overture to manage the technology in their meeting and training rooms, whereas the National Museum of African-American History and Culture runs the software to schedule daily museum hours and special events, and to report errors on over 300 A/V and lighting devices so their team of 3 people can more effectively manage all that technology. Meanwhile, at the National Museum of the American Indian, Overture is relied upon to supervise A/V equipment in its two locations in Washington DC and NYC in Battery Park.

Scheduling, alarms and access control

Among the key prerequisites for the Smithsonian Institution was to setup scheduling and to receive alarm notifications when there was trouble with AV devices. Overture’s user friendly interface permitted a rapid setup of scheduling and alarm notifications using only configuration with simple drop-down menus and checkboxes (no programming required). Access control was also set up from the beginning, enabling authorized staff with various levels of viewing and managing permissions. Now the Smithsonian uses Overture’s welcoming Magic Menu app to monitor and control all their devices from smartphones, tablets, and desktop computers.

“The best part of setting up the Overture and Medialon Show Control at each of the Smithsonian museums was seeing the reaction of the staff experiencing the power of Barco’s collaborative solution in action. The AV teams can finally rest assured they have a future-proof solution in place to meet and exceed all their current and foreseeable future requirements” said Eric Cantrell, Sales and Product Manager, Barco A/V Control Experience and Show Control.
