How the remote OR can boost your hospital’s efficiency

For many office workers, remote work has become a natural thing by now. Many of us don’t have to be in the same physical space as our colleagues to do our job. In certain sectors, like surgery, remote work is not that evident. And yet, the remote operating room (OR) is not that far away. Telesurgery is already feasible today, but there are also other ways in which the digital OR can create remote efficiencies.

More and more ORs are digitizing their workflows and running their operations over a standard IP network. Barco’s Nexxis OR-over-IP platform has been designed to do exactly that: to distribute high-quality, uncompressed video over IP easily and smoothly, with near-zero latency, in and between operating rooms and wherever surgeons need it.

OR efficiency

The implication of an OR-over-IP approach is that surgical video can now be consulted anywhere there is authorized internet connection. Surgical procedures can be simply streamed via a high-bandwidth network and secure gateway.

This creates a lot of opportunities to create remote efficiencies in the OR. When healthcare specialists or even non-clinical personnel do not have to be physically present in the OR, there is no need to travel, or lose time because of incompatible work schedules. In times when OR efficiency, cost reductions, and scarce medical resources are on top of the agenda, remote access to the OR could at least be part of the solution.

Remote surgery and training

Telesurgery – a surgical intervention performed by a surgeon who is not physically located with the patient – probably appeals most to the imagination. The OR-over-IP approach definitely makes it easier for surgeons to guide an operation from a distance, because it allows them to rely on the best image quality with the least latency.

But the possibilities of OR-over-IP expand well beyond telepresence surgery, to include telementoring, teleproctoring, and teleconsulting. While securely connected with remote participants, it has become much easier to meet, train, consult and interact with clinical and non-clinical professionals.

The need for remote training is high. With the increased complexity in today’s OR, and with an increased number of technologies that are brought in, surgeons need to rapidly learn and adapt to new techniques in order to deliver safe and accurate care. Some surgical specialties have steep learning curves because of their complexity and difficulty, resulting in long operation times and increased risk of operative complications.

With an OR-over-IP platform like Nexxis, it has become much easier to facilitate remote training and guidance, in a number of ways:

  • Telementoring is the remote, real-time guidance or teaching of a treatment or a surgical procedure where the local doctor has no or limited experience. This can also include remote access to the OR for vendor representatives who need to guide surgeons on the correct use of equipment or materials.
  • Teleproctoring is the monitoring, skill assessment and evaluation of surgical trainees from a distance.
  • Teleconsultation involves the transmission of still or video images for review by a remote specialist, who can then communicate his or her opinions to the local surgeon.

Barco’s Nexxis OR-over-IP platform is making remote access to the OR more convenient, making it easier and more cost-effective for remote specialists to put their expertise at the service of local surgeons.

The benefit of remote access may seem obvious in times when on-site access of clinical and non-clinical specialists is limited due to social distancing restrictions. But even far beyond the current global pandemic, it is unlikely that OR efficiency, cost reductions, and improving patient care will disappear from the agenda.
