The importance of early diagnosis and regular screening

Do you know anyone who has or is currently battling breast cancer? The chances you do are very high since one out of eight women is diagnosed with this type of cancer, and every year, breast cancer kills more than 500,000 women around the world. 1

The worldwide campaign takes place every October, involving thousands of organizations to highlight the importance of breast cancer research. Behind pink ribbons, there is a powerful statement - many women, their friends and families, together with doctors and nurses are relentlessly optimistic, searching for a cure and best treatments.

Early diagnosis and affordable treatment for all women

Unfortunately, not all women have equal chances. The majority of women who die from breast cancer live in low- and middle-income countries, where most women face the illness in a late-stage due to a variety of critical factors. These include limited awareness on the part of the public and health care providers and the lack of access to affordable and effective diagnosis and treatment. Women diagnosed with breast cancer in developing countries are mostly already at an advanced stage of the disease, limiting their five-year survival rates ranging from 10-40%. On the other side of the spectrum, in settings where early detection and necessary treatment are available and accessible, the five-year survival rate for early localized breast cancer exceeds 80%. 2

The early diagnosis comes as a result of improved public and professional awareness of signs and symptoms associated with cancer. Generally, the earlier breast cancer is detected and treated, the more successful the treatment. It's advised to check your breasts regularly because the earlier breast cancer is diagnosed, the better the chance of successful treatment.

Mammography is a standard when it comes to screening, but Digital Breast Tomosynthesis and other techniques are also growing as additional effective screening methods. Today, in the US more screening exams are done by DBT today than traditional mammography.

Why choose Barco mammography displays?

Did you know that over 80% of all breast screening centers worldwide select Barco breast imaging displays? Image quality and consistency are crucial to achieving a confident diagnosis, and ultimately, a successful course of treatment. Barco technologies go beyond pixels and lumens to enhance even the subtlest details to aid in precise detection at the earliest possible stage.

Barco mammography displays tackle some of the most critical challenges in modern radiology: increasing image volumes, growing complexity, and ergonomic stress. With dedicated display systems for traditional digital mammography, multi-modality breast imaging as well as breast tomosynthesis, Barco sets a new standard of care for women's health.

Barco's Nio Color 5MP and Coronis Uniti® displays are unique in their representation of calibrated colors and grayscales and remarkable in their 2D and 3D capabilities. Coronis Uniti has proven to increase the detection of small details in breast images by up to 30%! 3

By enabling more doctors to recognize early warning signs of cancer and take immediate action, the chances for a full recovery and a positive outcome rises for every patient.

Barco is committed to women's health and to spreading hope to women worldwide, and not only during October. Life is precious every day of the year.
