I tried to be innovative, but I got stuck in meetings all day.
I think it’s safe to say that most people feel that meetings are frequently a waste of time. Without leadership, structure, creating a meeting plan or defining roles and responsibilities, meetings can never be fully collaborative or productive.
Yet, our calendars are stacked with meetings every day. Clearly, there are those who believe in their worth because, there they are, scheduled weeks and months ahead. And, somewhere in-between all of these meetings, we desperately try to find time to be productive and get real work done. I once quipped that the work day is for meetings and home is for work. The more I think about it, the less funny it is. This is actually the reality for many of us.
But meetings are a part of everyday business culture and we are forever beholden to them. However, that doesn’t mean that we are helpless, eternally captive to a function of work that today, can represent the anthesis of creativity and collaboration.
The future of work needs architects
We live in a time of incredible innovation, an evolving state of digital Darwinism with mind-blowing technologies that are shaping the future of work right now. Today’s technology is more than capable of unleashing a new wave of potential and productivity. As technology disruption accelerates, its resulting effects on people and how they work and live is also continually changing.
To succeed, however, takes more than technology. Innovative technologies are enablers for either enhancing the old way of working or enlivening more inventive, collaborative and productive work. That’s the difference between iteration and innovation. The former is using new tech to do the same things better. The latter, innovation, is using new tech to create new value and opportunities.
The future of work is built upon a balance of both. And it is in how companies and operators innovate and to what extent work creates unique and compelling competitive advantages.

And, experiences, whether they’re exceptional or awful, become memories. Anything in between is forgettable.
