When history embraces technology and art …

Once home to famous poets, philosophers, musicians and artists like Goethe, Schiller, Bach, Franz Liszt, Nietzsche, Kandinsky and Paul Klee, the German Weimar is a real tourist hub. Each year, four million people visit the city to admire the historic buildings and parks, twelve of which are on the UNESCO World Heritage List. For those who love history with a blend of hi-tech, the best time to visit Weimar is during the Genius Loci festival in August!

The spirit of the location
Since 2012, the city has been scheduling an annual festival that provides a comprehensive overview of global video mapping trends. Video mapping artists from all over the world gather in Weimar to display works on the facades of the city’s most prestigious historic buildings. There is one prerequisite, though: the videos have to present the ‘genius loci’ or spirit of the location using the latest media art techniques. More than an exposition, Genius Loci Weimar is also a competition. Artists are invited to submit their works, which are then judged by an expert and a public jury (online voting). The three winners are invited to present their artwork at the festival.

“You should see their eyes”
As a fan of both history and the international video mapping artist community, AED provided a series of Barco HDF and HDX projectors to power the projection mappings during the 2014 edition of the event. “Projections are much brighter, thanks to the Barco projectors, and you can really use the projectors very flexibly. You should see the eyes of the artists when they play with the Barco gear. For many of them, it’s the first time they have had the opportunity to use professional equipment so they are really motivated,” said Hendrik Wendler, the festival organizer.

Event planner satis&fy and rental partner AED were delighted to work with Barco’s projectors too, as “Barco really is an innovation leader in rental and staging.” And most importantly: the 15,000 people who visited the festival were really amazed by what they saw!
