Contribution to the UN SDGs
For the Planet pillar, Barco focuses on three Sustainable Development Goals, issued by the United Nations:
- Responsible consumption and production
- Climate action
- Affordable and clean energy
Targets
The targets we have set for 2023 are very ambitious, as ever. We aim to:
- Reduce the carbon footprint of our own operations by 35% (baseline 2015)
- Reduce the energy footprint of our products by 25% (baseline 2015)
- Ensure that at least 70% of our hardware revenues comes from products with the Barco ECO label
Science Based Targets
As part of Barco’s commitment to accelerate its contribution to climate action, it has signed the “Business Ambition for 1.5°C commitment” from the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), joining leading companies in a promise to pursue science-based measures to limit global temperature rise to 1.5°C. The target formally approved by SBTi, is to reduce absolute scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions 45% by 2025 from a 2015 base year.

1. Footprint of our own operations
We have been concentrating on reducing the environmental footprint of our operations on different domains: infrastructure, mobility and logistics. This includes reducing energy consumption, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving circularity.
We are well on the way to reaching our 2023 planet targets thanks to a number of actions. For example, changing the default way of transportation from air to sea freight, has significantly reduced the environmental impact of our logistics. Thanks to the introduction in our offices of virtual classrooms using weConnect and Clickshare conference in the meeting rooms, we managed to reduce business travel and home-work commuting significantly. Furthermore, in all production facilities we are sourcing 100% of our electricity consumption from renewable sources.

2. Footprint of our products
We not only want to lower the footprint of our own operations, but also that of our customers. That is why we introduced ecodesign in our product innovation process. The ecodesign programs considers not only energy performance, but also the use of materials, packaging and logistics, and end-of-life optimization. In order to have an objective way of measuring the ecological performance of our products, we created the Barco Ecoscoring methodology. Products with an ecoscore of A or higher receive the Barco ECO label. Our target is to have 70% of our hardware revenues coming from Barco ECO labeled products by 2023.

Click here3. Circular solutions
The circular economy is a focus area in Barco’s sustainability strategy. The keys to success are smart design and services. By working on the longevity, connectivity, repairability and recyclability of our products, we make our products suitable for circular business models, such as Laser as a Service. That’s why design for circularity is an important part of Barco’s ecodesign program. We also offer recycling services to our customers. More information on our recycling policy is available here.
