Telkom, one of South Africa’s leading telecom providers, has been a trusted Barco customer for many years. The giant rear-projection Barco video walls that Questek Advanced Technologies installed at Telkom’s National Network Operations Center (NNOC) – the largest in South Africa! (272 rear-projection cubes) – and at its Information Technology Center (132 cubes) have been performing faultlessly for over ten years. So, when Telkom needed a top-notch visualization solution for its new Experience Center in Johannesburg, it naturally turned to Barco and Questek.
The zero bezel of this 7m display was an essential decision point as Telkom wanted to showcase a technology that had not been seen in South Africa before.
At its Experience Center, Telkom seeks to immerse VIP (prospective) customers into its world of satellite, data, voice, internet and network solutions. The center makes use of multiple scenarios to achieve that aim. After an introductory movie and several presentations, the customer is invited to embark on an interactive journey involving an interface between the various displays. Local Barco partner Questek helped design the center, ‘gluing’ together the multifaceted systems. Questek and Telkom chose Barco because of its high-quality solutions and multi-vendor approach.
Raymond Martin, Telkom’s AV specialist: “The center was designed to display our business networking and information technology capabilities. Best-of-breed, professional AV tools were, of course, a must — hence our choice of Barco’s seamless, flat OSV-711F collaboration video wall, featuring an intuitive touchscreen. The zero bezel of this 7m display was an essential decision point as Telkom wanted to showcase a technology that had not been seen in South Africa before. With its 6300 x 1920 resolution and 49-channel touch interface, the video wall allows visitors to move around and resize high-resolution images in a way that is far superior to anything our customers have ever seen.”
A premium user experience
Featuring a large, flat, seamless canvas, Barco’s OverView OSV-711F video wall is the perfect medium to display a mix of data and video simultaneously, in high quality. TransForm C, OSV's controller and collaboration management system, allows users to drag and drop content freely onto the screen. For ultimate ease-of-use and the best possible user experience, the OSV graphics controller includes Barco’s wireless presentation and collaboration system ClickShare, thus allowing Telkom users to display content from their laptops, tablets or smartphones simply by clicking a button.
Video wall, laser phosphor projectors and ClickShare
The OSV video wall works seamlessly together with six ceiling-mounted Barco laser phosphor projectors (PGWX-62L), to help visitors find their way around the center. When someone selects the application they want to check on the video wall, the laser phosphor projectors visualize the right direction on the floor, leading the user to a second set of displays where they can interact with the different aspects of Telkom’s business. “We chose the laser projectors for their ability to be mounted at unusual angles. Moreover, they offered the brightness required to display images on the carpeted surface,” explains Questek. In addition to the OSV video wall and our laser phosphor projectors, Telkom also installed ClickShare: the meeting room of the Experience Center is equipped with three ClickShare CSC units.
