A festival rooted in history and scale

What if a 12th-century chapel, perched on a volcanic rock, could come alive through light? At Puy de Lumières, that vision is now reality.

Since its launch in 2016, Puy de Lumières has established itself as one of the largest permanent video mapping and illumination trails in the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region. Every summer, it draws visitors from across France to Le Puy-en-Velay, guiding them through a curated nighttime journey across the city’s architectural and natural heritage.

At the heart of this experience are remarkable locations such as the Crozatier Museum, the Carmes Church, and the spectacular Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe Rock. This iconic volcanic formation, rising above the town, has become a defining highlight, now reimagined as a monumental projection surface, with images cast from a distance of approximately 230 meters.

Pushing the limits of outdoor storytelling

As the festival grew in ambition, so did the technical demands. The installation needed to deliver bright, high-resolution visuals across vast outdoor surfaces, often under challenging ambient light conditions. At Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe, the sheer projection distance added another level of complexity.

At the same time, the creative vision called for more advanced 3D mapping, richer colors, and greater visual precision to enhance storytelling across each site. Ensuring reliable, low-maintenance operation throughout the busy summer season was equally critical, alongside a clear commitment to more sustainable, energy-efficient technologies.

A projection platform designed for performance and creativity

Selected through a public procurement process, Barco delivered a solution built to meet these requirements without compromise. The upgraded installation combines QDX and UDM projector platforms across the different sites, creating a flexible and powerful projection ecosystem. Together, these solutions create a unified visual experience driven by Barco’s 3-chip DLP laser technology. The consistency in brightness, contrast, and color ensures that every story unfolds with the same visual intensity, regardless of surface or setting, from refined museum façades to rugged volcanic rock.

At Saint-Michel d’Aiguilhe Rock, three Barco QDX-4K45 projectors take on the challenge of distance and scale, casting striking, high-resolution imagery across the volcanic formation from 230 meters away. At the Crozatier Museum, two QDX-4K35 units bring architectural details to life with precise 4K clarity and refined color reproduction, while the Carmes Church is transformed into an immersive canvas through eight UDM-W30 projectors, delivering the brightness and flexibility needed for dynamic, large-scale mapping.

At the same time, the reliability of laser projection reduces maintenance and downtime, supporting uninterrupted daily operation throughout the summer season and allowing the festival team to focus on creativity rather than upkeep. The result is a future-ready platform that supports both artistic ambition and reliable, sustainable operation night after night.

A new light on timeless landmarks

With the new installations in place, Puy de Lumières enters its tenth season with renewed visual impact and creative freedom. Landmarks once defined by history alone now unfold as living stories. Every surface illuminated with greater clarity, depth, and emotion, drawing visitors into a journey where past and present seamlessly intertwine.

Behind the scenes, the benefits are just as tangible. What emerges is more than a technical upgrade. It is a redefinition of what the festival can offer. With Barco at its core, Puy de Lumières now stands ready to shape the next decade of immersive heritage, where storytelling continues to evolve and every summer night holds the promise of something extraordinary.
