Luminiscence has already welcomed more than one million visitors worldwide across historic venues in Europe before arriving in the United States. Minneapolis marks the experience’s North American debut, hosted inside the Basilica of Saint Mary – a building designated in 1926 as the first basilica in the U.S. and celebrating its centennial in 2026.
Through 360° video mapping, live choir and orchestral music, and narrated sequences, the show traces the Basilica’s origins, its role in the spiritual and cultural life of the city, and the people who shaped it. At key moments, the Basilica itself becomes a narrative voice, guiding the audience through its construction, symbolism and enduring presence in Minneapolis.
Every surface – from the barrel‑vaulted ceiling to the stone columns and decorative details – becomes part of the story, allowing visitors to experience the building not just as a space, but as a character with memory and meaning.
Delivering an immersive projection experience inside a functioning basilica posed a unique set of challenges. The production required enough brightness to fill the Basilica’s vast interior volume, while maintaining image clarity fine enough to respect architectural details such as reliefs, arches and ornamentation. Precision was essential, as even slight misalignment would break the illusion and risk distracting from the building’s heritage.
Beyond technical performance, the installation had to integrate seamlessly into a sacred, historic environment. Equipment needed to be discreet, reliable and suitable for repeated performances over several months, without interfering with the Basilica’s daily religious and community functions. Extensive 3D scans of the interior were used during the creative process to ensure that projections would align perfectly with the Basilica’s geometry.
To meet these requirements, the production selected 26 Barco G100‑W22 laser projectors. With 22,000 lumens of brightness per unit and WUXGA resolution, the projectors provided the visual power needed to illuminate the Basilica’s monumental scale while preserving subtle tonal transitions and fine textures.
The G100 series enabled consistent image quality across all projection zones, supporting precise mapping on curved vaults, columns and vertical surfaces. Their stable laser light source and low‑maintenance design were well suited for a show running multiple times per week, ensuring reliable operation throughout the engagement.
Thanks to the seamless integration of multiple projectors, the creative team was able to build a continuous 360° visual narrative in which light flows naturally across the architecture. Combined with live music and choral performances, the projections transform the Basilica into an immersive environment that feels both technically refined and emotionally resonant.
The Minneapolis edition of Luminiscence has been widely described as immersive, moving and reflective, attracting audiences well beyond the Basilica’s regular visitors. According to coverage, many attendees entered a Catholic church for the first time through the show, discovering its artistic and historical value in an accessible and contemporary way.
