After the soccer, came the films: looking back upon a successful Festival do Rio

These are exciting times for the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro. The host city for the final of the 2014 FIFA World Cup – and for the 2016 Olympic Games – has now just waved goodbye to the thousands of film fans that overwhelmed its cinemas for the recent Film Festival do Rio. As a preferred visualization partner, Barco had installed three digital cinema projectors for the screenings, including an ultra-bright 4K projector.

The largest
The Festival do Rio is rightfully acknowledged as the largest cinema festival in Latin America and definitely the best annual global showcase of contemporary Brazilian cinema. From 24 September to 8 October, over 350 films from more than 60 countries were screened, at 35 venues dotted across the city. Festival do Rio brings the best of Brazilian and international cinema in large as well as smaller cinema venues. As an event partner, Barco was glad to offer the right projector for the large Armazém da Utopia venue, as well as for smaller theaters.

Every size of venue
Armazém da Utopia is a former warehouse located in the port zone, which is now used for entertainment events. The 4,500 square meter building houses a screening room for public presentations, where Barco’s top-range DP4K-23B projector – fit for screens with sizes up to 32 meters – did a great job. The smaller Estação Rio 2 theater featured a DP-2K-10s small cinema projector, while the Pavilhão do Festival relied on a DP2K-20C solution.

Speeding up digitization
It took quite a while before Brazil’s cinemas took the step to digital, but digitization is now sweeping the country. Several cinemas, such as Cine Lumine, for example, resolutely chose to go digital with Barco equipment. By supporting the film festival, we want to highlight our commitment to the Brazilian cinema industry!
