The upgrade behind better pilot readiness

Türkiye · 2026

In advanced pilot training, realism is essential. Visual systems must create immersive environments that help trainees build confidence, sharpen situational awareness, and develop critical skills in a safe and controlled setting. When HAVELSAN set out to modernize two Full Mission Simulators, the organization selected Barco to deliver the largest and most complex visual display upgrade project in its simulator portfolio, enhancing image quality while improving long-term reliability and maintainability.

Barco solutions:

  • 50x FS40-4K MKII

Key benefits:

  • Proven partnership based on successful previous projects
  • Visual clarity, contrast and consistency for advanced simulation environments
  • Solid-state LED illumination ensures stable performance over time
  • Seamless integration with existing ecosystem

Future-proofing a critical training asset

HAVELSAN's Full Mission Simulators play an important role in advanced flight training, providing highly immersive environments where F16 pilots can practice procedures and experience realistic flight scenarios.

To ensure these simulators continue meeting evolving training requirements, HAVELSAN launched a major visual system upgrade. The upgrade involves two rear-projected dome display systems, each delivering a 360° horizontal field of view and a 135° vertical field of view. With 25 projectors per dome, achieving consistent image quality across the entire display surface required exceptional precision.

Modernizing a highly complex visual environment

The objective was clear: significantly improve image quality, extend system longevity, and ensure the platform remains maintainable and supportable for years to come. At the same time, the project needed to preserve key elements of the existing infrastructure, including the legacy image generator, while seamlessly integrating modern display technology.

Balancing cutting-edge visual performance with the practical realities of system integration made this the largest and most complex simulator visual display upgrade project undertaken by HAVELSAN.

Transforming immersive training with a 50-projector upgrade

To deliver the upgrade, HAVELSAN selected Barco's FS40-4K MKII projectors, building on years of positive experience with Barco solutions and a strong working relationship between the two organizations.

Each dome system was upgraded with 25 Barco FS40 4K MKII projectors, creating a highly immersive visual environment while preserving the existing image generation infrastructure. The solution also integrated a camera-based automatic alignment system and motorized optical blending mechanisms, ensuring seamless imagery across the entire dome surface.

By leveraging Barco's LED light source technology and DLP architecture, the systems provide consistent visual performance over time without the gradual degradation associated with traditional projection technologies. This helps preserve image quality throughout the projector lifecycle while reducing maintenance requirements.

In addition, the upgraded visual system maintains Night Vision Goggle (NVG) compatibility, enabling users to train in specialised simulated environments that require accurate visual reproduction under night-vision conditions.

Better visuals, lower maintenance, lasting value

HAVELSAN now operates two upgraded F-16 Full Mission Simulators that combine advanced visual performance with the long-term reliability required for mission-critical pilot training.

The FS40 platform's 4K resolution, solid-state illumination technology, and dependable performance provided a future-ready foundation capable of supporting demanding simulation applications while simplifying long-term operation and maintenance.
