OneLook is the solution we’ve been pursuing ever since we entered this market.
Onelook: a team effort built on 27 years' experience

It was 1998 when Barco decided to leverage its expertise in display solutions to expand into the healthcare market. Since then, our company has been on a mission to develop the world's best digital diagnostic display system. Is Coronis OneLook that dream come true? Senior Product Manager Albert Xthona takes us back in time - and into the future.
When Albert joined Barco in 1990, the healthcare sector was not yet on our company's rader. He was, however, delighted to join the new team a few years later, as a product manager: “Since then, I’ve been deeply connected to healthcare, constantly trying to understand and deliver what doctors really need and want.”
Impossible? Let’s do this!
Digital imaging solutions were brand new at the time. While several players were working on medical displays, a digital mammography display was non-existent. “Breast screening is the next level of digital imaging, as it demands visualization of exceptionally fine detail,” Albert explains. “While no one had developed a medical display capable of achieving that, I was confident that Barco could. After all, the solving of hypercomplex, challenging problems is how Barco excels.”
Stepping up to achieve picture-perfect detail
That’s how Barco became the market leader in digital mammography imaging, advancing their expertise year after year. “The Coronis Uniti system that we launched a decade ago was revolutionary,” Albert continues. ”Still, we never stopped pushing the envelope to get closer to the solution that every radiologist wants: a digital display system that is so accurate and precise that it matches the exact detail of both physical X-ray films and modern digital detectors.”
Improving health outcomes
OneLook boasts the highest number of image lines and pixels that Barco has ever achieved. It also ensures consistent grayscales, an expansive color range, a large, wide screen, a touch bar and innovative productivity features.
Albert highlights why these advances are crucial: “In radiology, the first impression is everything. OneLook enables radiologists to readily detect the tiniest details, such as microcalcifications, with ease. This dramatically enhances diagnostics and ultimately, improves health outcomes.”
Did you know that
the first requests for digital imaging came from the military? They wanted to simplify medical examinations on ships without flying physical films to the mainland.
Increasing worldwide access to screening
“More than that, OneLook significantly boosts productivity, as it reduces the steps needed to view all these details,” he continues. ”Previous solutions required constant zooming and panning, but OneLook displays the entire image on one screen.
This productivity gain allows radiologists to handle more cases, which benefits both doctors and hospitals. It also reduces costs for healthcare systems and governments, making it easier to fund and expand screening programs. This is especially important in countries with limited healthcare budgets.
Ultimately, OneLook has the potential to increase access to high-quality screening worldwide, and thus improve global health outcomes – which has, in fact, been the mission of Barco’s healthcare team since 1998."

A big team effort
Barco started making plans for OneLook as soon as its predecessor Coronis Uniti had been launched. The actual development phase spanned about five years. Albert stresses the incredible team effort involved in designing such a revolutionary product: “It all starts with scientists, both Barco and external people, who analyze the needs, the feasibility, the technology and the impact.”
“Very soon, also people from finance, legal, procurement, and logistics are involved to determine budgets, find suppliers, apply for trademarks, etc. Engineering plays a starring role, of course, and then come validation, manufacturing and quality. Once the deadline is approaching, Barco University develops training for service, sales and support teams, as well as for our distributors, and marketing gets on a roll.”
Big thanks to our ecosystem of healthcare professionals
Albert emphasizes the crucial role of doctors and medical physicists in Barco’s advanced medical display solutions: "From conception to launch and beyond, continuous interaction with potential customers and end-users is key. Only through close collaboration do we understand their needs. You’ll often find us in radiology reading rooms, observing how radiologists work. They’re fantastic teachers, always eager to share their knowledge, experiences and insights."
He adds: “When exploring what radiologists expect from a mammography display, everyone agrees on picture-perfect image quality and a larger display. When we dig deeper into the extra details they want, we get so many different answers that we decided to integrate customizable buttons and profiles in OneLook. That’s just one example of how customer feedback drives innovation at Barco.”
Mission accomplished. What’s next?
In the meantime, OneLook has been launched and the feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. "Everyone was waiting for this high-quality mammography display that reveals the full resolution, the tiniest details, in one, single view,” says Albert.
Has Barco fulfilled its mission? “There’s always room for improvement. We keep listening to end-users and the medical world, refining OneLook to meet every need. This exceptional system is also ideal for integrating artificial intelligence to push the boundaries of medical imaging. That said, I’m confident that we’ve achieved an incredible milestone – something that was technologically impossible just 10 years ago.”
