Bad sound looks ugly. Why and how we launched the ClickShare Bar

2024 stories · Innovation · Enterprise · 9 min read

ClickShare is built around you

Squinting, furrowed brows, leaning in awkwardly: did you ever see your facial expression when you were struggling to hear or understand something? Poor audio and video look ugly – and kill meeting engagement: that’s the message of the campaign that Barco launched in 2024 to introduce the ClickShare Bar. ClickShare Product Manager Gauthier Renard and his colleagues share how the newcomer in the ClickShare family came alive.

For this chat, Gauthier sat around the table with Wouter Devinck, R&D architect, and Frauke De Graeve, Marketing Communications Manager. They are part of Barco’s Meeting Experience (MX) team – spanning R&D, sales, product, marketing, services, and much more – who all work along to make meetings seamless worldwide.

Low-threshold, all-in-one solution

ClickShare has been a frontrunner for many years. To strengthen its market position, the MX team keeps updating the existing solutions. In addition, they think out of the box to come up with alternatives that ensure an exceptional meeting room experience.

"That’s how the ClickShare Bar was born," says Gauthier: “End-users told us they were looking for a high-quality wireless conferencing solution that was easy to set up and maintain. So, we decided to develop a low-threshold, all-in-one audio and video solution that boasts a lower Total Cost of Ownership.”

A lightning-fast launch? We nailed it!

"The idea was great, yet the project was no small feat,” says Wouter. “We stepped into a new domain. Barco is a visualization expert, but this time, we had to master both video and audio technology. That meant finding the right hardware partners and defining clear roles. In the end, we chose to co-develop the solution, appointed a central integration partner and brought in several new colleagues with expertise in audio to streamline development.”

Thanks to the hard work of the entire team, a prototype of the ClickShare Bar was ready right on time for launch at ISE2024. Based on feedback, the product was then further fine-tuned – and the improvements haven’t stopped since.

Unlocking new markets

“The ClickShare Bar is perfect for customers looking to equip smaller meeting rooms with an all-in-one audio and video solution, as it’s easy to install and offers a low Total Cost of Ownership," says Gauthier.

Users gain access to the renowned ClickShare experience, with its unique benefits: unparalleled ease of use, outstanding security, easy network integration, free firmware updates, no license fees, a free SmartCare service package with 5 years of coverage, remote management and configuration options, and extra features via the ClickShare app.

Love meeting

To spread the word about all these benefits, the MX business unit relies on Frauke and her communication team, who found an exceptional marketing approach to set ClickShare apart from other wireless meeting solutions: “At ClickShare, we prioritize a human-centric approach,” she explains. “This is unique, both within Barco and across our industry. While others often go for a product-driven, technical angle, we made the conscious choice to focus on the user experience from day one.

The ‘Love Meeting’ tagline that we launched in 2023 embodies this philosophy, as does the bold ‘Bad sound looks ugly’ teaser campaign that we created for the launch of the ClickShare Bar. It’s really fun to be creative and create fun, edgy campaigns that grab attention.”

The power of global teamwork

The team behind ClickShare's eye-catching marketing campaigns is global, with members across Europe, the US, and Asia. The same applies to the other teams. A significant part of Wouter’s R&D colleagues, for example, are based in Taiwan.

“No matter where they’re working, every colleague shares an incredible level of dedication and enthusiasm,” says Gauthier. “Collaboration here is remarkably strong compared to other companies I’ve worked with. While challenges exist, everyone is highly motivated to make a difference, which creates an incredibly positive atmosphere. There’s a lot of passion and drive within the team to constantly innovate, work alongside with customers and partners, and deliver real value.”

Bad sound looks ugly on the MX team too

Frauke illustrates the excitement and creativity in the MX team with this story: “Before introducing the ClickShare Bar in 2024, we ran a ‘Bad Sound Looks Ugly’  teaser campaign. The visuals featured people making funny faces, emphasizing how bad audio disrupts meetings. Right before the launch, we involved the entire ClickShare team, encouraging them to share their own funny ‘Bad sound looks ugly’ photos. The response was great, adding a personal and playful touch to the campaign.

Real impact means working sustainably

While committed to constantly innovate, the team is equally focused on making a positive impact on the planet. Thanks to hard work and solid choices, the ClickShare Bar is carbon-neutral.

“It’s more than just commitment,” Frauke highlights. “ClickShare is a true trendsetter within Barco and across the industry. We actively push the sustainability agenda forward by deliberately choosing the sustainable option, even when it comes at a higher cost. That’s one of the many things I love about this team: the relentless drive to, well, raise the bar in every respect.”
