ClickShare Desktop App installation triggers "Location Services" popup in Windows 11 24H2

Numéro d'article: [14911]

Applicable à

Windows 11 (24H2) introduces two levels of control for location services:

1. System-Level Location Setting (Global Toggle)

  • This is the master switch for location services.
  • If disabled, no app—regardless of type—can access location data.
  • Must be enabled first to allow any app to request location access.

2. App-Level Location Permissions

Once the system-level location is enabled, app-level permissions come into play. These are split into two categories:

A. Packaged Apps (Store Apps)
  • Installed via Microsoft Store.
  • Each app has individual location permission.
  • You can enable/disable location access per app.
B. Non-Packaged Apps (Win32/Desktop Apps)
  • Installed via traditional installers (e.g., .exe.msi).
  • These apps share a single global permission.
  • You cannot control location access per app—it’s all or nothing.
  • ClickShare Desktop App falls into this category.

Since ClickShare is a non-packaged app, it does not have a unique App ID recognized by Windows for location permissions, Therefore, you cannot manage its location access individually via MDM or GPO using App ID. The only way to allow location access for ClickShare is to enable location for all non-packaged apps globally.

What You Can Do Instead

  • Ensure system-level location is enabled.
  • Enable location access for all non-packaged apps via:
    • Settings > Privacy & security > Location
    • Or via Group Policy / MDM settings that control non-packaged app permissions.

-----------------

When doing a new installation or an update to Windows 24H2 you may encounter the popup shown below. The ClickShare Desktop App needs to scan Wi-Fi for device discovery, and this requires the location service to be enabled. If not enabled, this can trigger a notification in Windows.

This message is introduced by one of the new features of Windows 11, as mentioned in the release notes from Microsoft.

The above Windows popup has been suppressed from ClickShare App version 4.41 and upwards. Still if the ClickShare Desktop App has no access to this location services, it will not populate the "Rooms nearby" correctly and will show a notification when starting the App. You can still connect to your meeting room (ClickShare device) by manually entering its IP address or the meeting room name - see below for instructions.

1. Click on the magnifier icon to open the text bar

2. Manually enter the IP address or Room (or SSID) name

Solution:

  • User with admin access: They can adapt the location settings under the location and privacy settings and add ClickShare App access location.

  • Users without admin access: They will need to request support from the IT team to enable the service remotely. Here is an example for IT admins using MS Intune:

Once enabled correctly the "Rooms nearby" section will be populated correctly again and the message when starting the App will no longer be displayed.
