Context

Moment Factory, with over two decades of expertise and a portfolio spanning Montreal, Tokyo, New York, Paris and beyond, has pioneered immersive storytelling for cultural landmarks worldwide. Their AURA series of large-scale immersive experiences exemplifies this vision, blending artistry and technology to reconnect audiences with history.

For the first European AURA edition, Cultival commissioned Moment Factory – known for AURA at Montreal’s Notre‑Dame Basilica – to design a new monumental, nighttime experience at Les Invalides, in partnership with the Musée de l’Armée. The goal: invite locals and visitors to (re)discover the Dôme’s rich architecture and living history, across six chapels and under the iconic dome, with a narrative unfolding in three movements.

Challenge

The listed heritage status of the Dôme des Invalides demanded absolute respect for its architectural and historical integrity. The creative and technical team needed to deliver a fully immersive environment across a 3,500 m² projection canvas, seamlessly integrating with ornate surfaces, the complex Visconti altar, and centuries‑old details, while ensuring zero impact on the site. It would require precision mapping, color fidelity, optical consistency, and silent reliability across a multi‑projector deployment – night after night, and movement after movement.

Solution

Moment Factory’s multidisciplinary approach, combining creative direction, technical mastery, and real‑time innovation, was key to overcoming the challenges of AURA Invalides. Their ability to integrate heritage sensitivity with cutting‑edge tools ensured every detail honored the monument while elevating the visitor experience.

Working shoulder‑to‑shoulder with curators and heritage authorities, Moment Factory refined content on‑site to align with the venue’s light, color, and texture – then deployed a mixed fleet of Barco G‑series and Barco UDM laser projectors to cover the broad surfaces and tall verticals, and transform the monument into a living immersive canvas.

This range of projectors made it possible to tune coverage to diverse surface types, ensuring uniform illumination with confident color and image integrity through the Dôme and its chapels. Barco Pulse’s precise blending and warping kept storytelling cohesive across the complex, curved and highly ornate surfaces.

The projectors’ placement flexibility also proved essential. The compact chassis, wide lens ranges for difficult throw distances and generous lens shift enabled discreet mounting and optimal geometry within the architecture. The installation safeguards the Dôme’s integrity while making its story accessible, immediate, and profoundly inspiring.

Reliability is safeguarded by robust designs, reducing maintenance and preserving brightness consistency across blended arrays. Barco’s swap‑based support for G‑series and a global service ecosystem provided the confidence that the show would go on without interruption – critical for ticketed runs.

Results

AURA Invalides delivers what audiences crave from immersive art in public space: collective wonder. Locals revisit a familiar place with new eyes; visitors connect emotionally to one of Paris’s main heritage sites. The orchestral score, mapped visuals, and choreographed light converge into moments that people remember long after they step back into the city night. With plans to expand the AURA concept to other iconic sites worldwide, Moment Factory continues to set the benchmark for cultural storytelling through light and technology.
