Context
The Potosina National Fair, commonly known as FENAPO, one of Mexico’s most celebrated annual trade fairs, held each August in the city of San Luis Potosí. It’s a vibrant fusion of concerts, cultural showcases, artisan stalls, and culinary delights – drawing thousands of visitors from across the country and beyond. The fair is a cornerstone of regional pride and a major tourist attraction.
This year’s poster was designed to reflect the rich cultural heritage of San Luis Potosí, incorporating visual motifs inspired by the state’s six Pueblos Mágicos. But the unveiling wasn’t just about design—it also revealed the fair’s international artist lineup, featuring names like Marilyn Manson, Enrique Iglesias, and DJ Tiësto. The Board wanted a reveal that would resonate across traditional media and ignite social platforms. Ilumotion’s mission: create a moment that would amplify the fair’s identity and leave a lasting impression.
Challenge
The venue’s architecture presented a unique canvas, and a complex challenge. The main velarium, a vast tilted surface measuring roughly 30 by 35 meters and rising between 8 and 12 meters high, required projection not only across its roof but also over the audience. This demanded precise geometry, powerful brightness, and flawless image blending from extreme angles.
The concept called for a cross-diagonal projection setup using two projectors, each tasked with covering one side of the velarium. The visuals needed to maintain sharpness and color fidelity throughout dynamic movement. It was the first time a video mapping reveal of this scale had ever been attempted at the fair, raising the stakes for technical perfection and creative impact.
Solution
To meet the challenge, Ilumotion turned to Barco, its trusted partner for high-performance projection. The team deployed two Barco UDM-W22 projectors, each paired with a TLD+ Ultra Short Throw lens, configured in a cross-positioned setup. This allowed for seamless coverage across the velarium’s expansive and angled surfaces.
The projectors were carefully aligned and blended to cover both sides of the velarium, with visuals choreographed to cascade from the roof toward the stage screens, culminating in the dramatic reveal of the poster. Synchronized with lighting and sound, the projection became an integral part of the show -immersive, cinematic, and emotionally resonant. Throughout the performance, Barco’s projectors delivered impeccable sharpness and color consistency, enabling the audience to experience the reveal as a unified visual journey.
Results
The outcome was nothing short of spectacular. The video mapping reveal captivated audiences and dominated both local and national media coverage. Photos and videos of the projection flooded social media, with the Board and State Government sharing the moment through their official channels.
For Ilumotion, the project was a testament to the power of creative ambition backed by reliable technology. It showcased how Barco’s precision and performance can elevate a concept into an unforgettable experience, one that celebrates culture, excites audiences, and redefines what’s possible in live event production.
