HDR by Barco marks an entirely new era in cinema

2024 stories · Entertainment · Innovation · 15 min read

Hollywood’s biggest producers, directors, colorists and cinematographers – Joe Kosinski, Jerry Bruckheimer, Stefan Sonnenfeld, … – are all impressed by Barco’s HDR Lightsteering technology. For Joachim Zell, our head of HDR content workflow, this comes as no surprise: “This technology is absolutely revolutionary.”

For the past few years, Barco has been showcasing its HDR Lightsteering technology at film festivals and trade shows around the world. 2024 marked the true go-live of the revolutionary cinema projection technology.

“HDR Lightsteering delivers truly groundbreaking image quality: unprecedented brightness, profound deep shadow details, and captivating contrast,” says Joachim. With 25+ years’ experience in the motion pictures and film industry, Joachim knows what he’s talking about. Prior to joining Barco in 2022, he served as VP of Imaging Science at EFILM/Deluxe, following post-production roles at Technicolor, among others. The perfect man to dive into the story of HDR by Barco.

Getting the film world on board

You joined Barco as head of HDR content workflow. What does that mean?

Joachim: “I introduce the studios and post-production houses to HDR by Barco. So, I travel around the globe to present the technology and, whenever possible, I invite studios to our theater in Los Angeles to demonstrate how their movies look in HDR on the big theater screen. As I’ve been active in this world for over 20 years, I know many directors, cinematographers, and colorists personally. Some of today’s customers were my colleagues or peers in the past. Together with my colleague colorist Iris Wu, I also work directly with Hollywood star colorists to support them in adapting films for HDR Lightsteering.

How hard is it to get studios on board with HDR?

Joachim: “HDR Lightsteering has been around for many years. While studios now approach us about it, getting that initial foot in the door took work. We showcased it at tradeshows and film festivals globally, from LA to Bangkok and Cannes, and that strategy paid off. Independent filmmakers are especially enthusiastic. They’d see their movies in HDR for the first time and light up like kids in a candy store: ‘Wow, I’ve never seen my film with such clarity and quality."

What about established filmmakers?

Joachim: “They were more cautious at first, understandably protective of their movies. That’s why we launched our pilot program, showcasing blockbusters in selected theaters. It usually took three to five sessions with directors and filmmakers to win them over. In the meantime, we’re getting fantastic feedback, so more and more studios are willing to try.”

Coming to a theater near you?

In 2024, 8 blockbuster movies, from 5 studios, were released in HDR by Barco in premium theaters in the US and the UK.

  • Transformers One (Paramount Animation and Hasbro Entertainment)
  • The Wild Robot (Dreamworks Animation and Universal)
  • Smile 2 (Paramount)
  • Joker: Folie A Deux (Warner Bros)
  • Read One (Amazon MGM Studios)
  • Gladiator II (Paramount)
  • Kraven the Hunter (Sony Studios)
  • Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (Paramount)

The future of cinema is HDR by Barco

So, tell me, what makes HDR by Barco so special?

Joachim: “Digital projectors have been around for about 20 years. Before that we looked at film projection for 100 years. In fact, the contrast of cinema projection has not changed for 120 years.

HDR changes all that. By switching from SDR to HDR, images become six times brighter and darker than standard cinema. Colors are more vibrant, and the original image retains far more detail. That  gives  colorists an entirely new palette of colors, and more shades of light and dark to tell the story.”

How easy is it for them to use the new technology?

Joachim: “For experienced professionals, it’s an effortless transition. Most studios already work with HDR for home or with alternatives, and we follow industry standards, so this isn’t new to them. Thanks to our software, they need just 15 minutes to get started. In total, adapting a movie for HDR takes only 1 to 2 extra days. Note that we did make significant investments to ensure these plug-and-play capabilities. In fact, it was a key prerequisite when developing HDR.”

How do exhibitors react to HDR by Barco?

Joachim: “This projector will absolutely drive more cinema visits. It will help cinema owners be future-proof. Beyond the stunning image quality, its serviceability is a major advantage. While the images are super bright, the laser light source lasts up to 30,000 hours. That significantly reduces maintenance costs.”

Do you target premium cinema screens?

Joachim: “For now, theaters look to adopt HDR by Barco for their premium rooms. But in the long run, we want HDR to become the standard in every cinema. It’s like the shift from black-and-white to color TV – eventually, everyone wanted a color TV.  So, we’re starting with premium formats, but the goal is to bring HDR to the entire market in the longer term. That's how we'll keep cinema relevant and thriving."

The journey to HDR by Barco

Joachim’s colleagues Gerwin Damberg, EVP of our Cinema business unit, and Anders Ballestadt, Innovation Strategy Director for Cinema, invented HDR Lightsteering at MTT Innovation, which was acquired by Barco. “We set the bar high,” says Gerwin. “Building a new projector is relatively simple. But designing one that delivers a step-change in quality, remains affordable, and is easy to create content for, that was a real challenge.”

So how did they achieve it? “HDR Lightsteering is more than a projector. It includes a high-performance computer that redirects or recycles laser light to produce exceptionally bright, high-contrast images. To help creatives get the most out of the system, we collaborated closely with them, studying their workflows and then designing our software around their needs.”

Building an HDR fanbase

Any big names you’d like to drop as fans of HDR?

Joachim: “Well, we’ve had some awesome reactions. Joe Kosinski and Jerry Bruckheimer, the director and producer of  Top Gun: Maverick, watched their film in HDR, along with Stefan Sonnenfeld, one of the world’s top colorists. They were all amazed by how bright and vibrant it looked. We’re secretly hoping they’ll do their next project in HDR.

As a member of the American Society of Cinematographers (ASC), I’ve had the pleasure to work with icons who regularly visit to see their footage on our system because it reveals every detail without compromise.”

What about interest outside Hollywood. Is HDR catching on elsewhere?

Joachim: “Absolutely. We’ve installed a system at Leicester Square in London, and Asia is very interested too. Recently, Sony and representatives from the Asian World Film Festival came to see it. I believe we’re really on track for rapid global expansion.”

The HDR format has allowed us to highlight some extreme contrast ranges. It’s impressive, we’ve never seen this before.
