How Petrobas Convention Center redefined its view with Barco laser projection

Brazil · 2025

The Antônio Seabra Moggi Convention Center, located at the Petrobras Research Center (CENPES) in Rio de Janeiro, is a strategic venue for technical presentations, training sessions, and executive meetings. To maintain its reputation for excellence and ensure high-quality visual experiences, Petrobras recently undertook a major modernization project to upgrade its projection systems.

How Petrobas Convention Center redefined its view with Barco laser projection

Barco solutions:

  • 6x G50-W6 projector
  • 1x G50-W8 projector

Key benefits:

  • Long-term reliability with laser-phosphor performances
  • Compact design for seamless integration in existing infrastructure
  • Exceptional viewing experience with clarity and reliability

Context

The convention center comprises three modular multipurpose rooms and a dedicated videoconferencing space with rear projection. These environments host critical events where image clarity, reliability, and seamless integration are essential. Petrobras needed a solution that would enhance image quality, improve operational availability, and reduce maintenance costs, all while preserving the existing infrastructure.

The upgrade initiative was led by Videomática Sistemas Audiovisuais e Automação Ltda., with Barco projectors supplied by WWT Worldwide Trading.

Challenge

The project aimed to retrofit the existing projection park without requiring civil works or major structural changes, ensuring minimal downtime and continuity of operations. This meant adapting the fasteners to fit new equipment while maintaining the original screen distances and dimensions. The team also needed to preserve the wiring and ensure integration with the existing Crestron automation system. All of this had to be achieved with minimal disruption to the convention center’s operations.

Solution

To meet Petrobras’ modernization goals without altering the existing infrastructure, Videomática opted for Barco’s G50 series projectors, known for their compact design, advanced laser technology, and seamless integration capabilities. The installation included six G50-W6 projectors and one G50-W8 projector, strategically placed across the three multipurpose rooms and videoconferencing space.

The choice of the G50 series was driven by several factors. First, the laser light source offers a lifespan of up to 20,000 hours, eliminating the need for frequent lamp replacements and significantly reducing maintenance costs. Second, the projectors’ compact and lightweight design, combined with a wide range of variable zoom lenses, allowed for flexible installation within the existing setup.

Integration with the existing Crestron automation system was another key advantage. The G50 projectors provide direct compatibility, ensuring smooth control and automation without additional hardware or complex configurations. The retrofit strategy focused on adapting the existing supports and making precise alignment adjustments. This approach preserved the original infrastructure, minimized installation complexity, and guaranteed continuity of operations with minimal downtime.

Results

By leveraging Barco’s advanced technology and Videomática’s expertise, Petrobras achieved a modernization that combined high performance with operational efficiency, all while respecting the constraints of the existing environment. Image quality improved significantly, with sharper visuals, enhanced brightness, and superior contrast and uniformity. Maintenance became simpler, and the availability of meeting spaces increased thanks to the reliability of laser technology. Operating costs were reduced by eliminating consumables such as lamps, and users quickly recognized and praised the improvements.
