Since 2012, the Culturespaces “des Lumières” concept uses unique cutting-edge technology to create immersive exhibitions devoted to some of the most famous artists in the history of art. The venues in France – Carrières des Lumières, Atelier des Lumières and Bassins des Lumières, all powered by Barco projection – attract over one million visitors per year who have all been able to feast their eyes on digitised works of art from the likes of Vincent van Gogh, Claude Monet and Salvador Dalí.
Culturespaces is now keen to build on its unique French expertise by taking its concept to a global stage opening its latest sites in Seoul, New York and Dubai. With Phoenix des Lumières, Culturespaces comes to Germany for the first time. Thanks to a long legacy of successful collaborations, Barco is once again selected as the preferred projection partner for the permanent center for immersive art in Dortmund.
Housed within the walls of the famous Phoenix West steel factory, the venue opened its doors in January 2023. The exhibitions will be designed to complement the unique architecture of the former gas treating, with its 13-metre-high walls and a total of 5600-m²-projection surface. The exhibition follows the same outline as Culturespaces’ prestigious Atelier des Lumières in Paris and deploys around 100 F80 and G62-W11 Barco laser projectors.
To mark its opening, Phoenix des Lumières presents an immersive exhibition exploring a century of Viennese painting and offering a one-of-a-kind look at the work of Gustav Klimt and his successors through a plethora of large-format portraits, landscapes, nudes, colours and golds. The new center received raving feedback upon its opening and has welcomed 50,000 visitors already in its first month.
Meanwhile Culturespaces and Barco are continuing their partnership throughout 2023 and 2024 with more news on new locations coming soon.
